Spider-Man: Far From Home is now in theaters. This is the first movie in the MCU to take place after Avengers: Endgame, and it is the final movie in Phase 3 of the shared universe. In GameSpot's Far From Home review, Meg Downey said, "It's full of heart and good intentions, clever, quick-witted, and confident enough to pull off some really insane reveals. The parts that work, work very, very well. But the parts that don't tend to feel like stubbed toes or irritating splinters--not life-threatening by any means, but distracting at best and annoying at worst; like someone pulled the curtain back on the MCU's systemic shortcomings a little too far."
Spider-Man: Far From Home couldn't have come at a better time. Tony Stark is dead. The rest of the Avengers are mourning his passing. And we said goodbye to a senior citizen-aged Captain America. What better time to celebrate the young blood of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and do so with a bit of irreverence and humor?
Spider-Man: Homecoming was about Peter coming to terms with his responsibilities and limitations; he needed to grow up, but also not grow up too quickly. Spider-Man: Far From Home doubles down on those themes.
Peter travels all the way to Europe to take a well-deserved vacation, but instead finds himself right back in the thick of things: recruited by Nick Fury, partnered with Mysterio, and battling the Elementals. He's still a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but it's quickly becoming a global neighborhood rather than a local one.
Speculation about the movie is rampant; Fans have spent hours dissecting the limited footage available, to get the smallest hint of what we're in store for come July 2. Here are 7 of the most fascinating theories so far.
1. MJ is Nick Fury's Daughter?
The evidence for this connection is mostly figurative. But fans have noticed foreshadowing that MJ could be Nick Fury's daughter, or is connected to him in some way.
She has a way of sneaking up on people in her scenes, where people don't notice she's there (like at the house party in Spider-Man: Homecoming). Her hair is always hanging in her face on one side, which might be a nod to her father's injured eye.
She's anti-authority and politically active. She's very good at analyzing and reading situations; she asks at the end of Homecoming what Peter is hiding, and in the Far From Home trailer, she may have even figured out his secret identity. When Nick Fury tracks Peter down, is he also keeping an eye on his daughter?
It also creates a good running joke; Peter's first love interest was the daughter of Vulture. It would be very unfortunate if his second love interest was the daughter of his boss. The kid can't seem to catch a break.
2. What If Nick Fury Isn't Really Nick Fury?
In the trailer footage, we see Nick Fury tranquilize Ned with a dart to the neck; Ned hits the ground like a sack of potatoes.
It seems like a risky, skull-fracturing move, especially for someone of Fury's sophistication and subtlety. And that's led some people to speculate that the Nick Fury we see in the trailer isn't Nick Fury at all; it's actually a Mysterio illusion, designed to draw Spider-Man into a dangerous situation.
Another theory is that Nick Fury is actually Chameleon. One of Mysterio's henchmen is listed as Dimitri. And the name of Chameleon's human alter ego in the comics is Dmitri Smerdyakov.
3. A Meaningful Missed Call, And More?
To follow up on the prior point, we see in the Far From Home trailer that Spider-Man ghosts Nick Fury, much to Happy Hogan's disappointment. And one Redditor has a great theory: What if that phone call was from the real Nick Fury, warning him about Mysterio, and everything afterward is an illusion or deception? This would be the sort of "comedy of errors" occurrence that Spider-Man: Homecoming specialized in.
4. Does Tony Stark Have One Last Trick Up His Sleeve?
The magazine Total Film revealed that there is a secret Stark lab at the back of the Stark jet. And the trailers indicate that Peter gains access to this secret room; we see him trying on the virtual prototype of a robotic suit's arm. Fans speculate that this might be the red-and-black suit we see in some of the trailer shots. Stark may have hidden it away, or he may have left the plans or tools for Peter to build it himself.
5. Are There Multiple Spider-Men?
The multiverse opens up a realm of possibilities. It means there could be other Spider-Men in many other universes. And that means we may get a jaw-dropping cameo, if fan theorists have their way.
What if Tobey Maguire, who played Peter Parker for the three Sam Raimi films, or Andrew Garfield, who starred in the two Amazing Spider-Man films, had a cameo in Far From Home? A multiverse could make the older films canon, and it would raise the possibility of seeing actors like Alfred Molina as Dr. Octopus (which everyone loved) without reinventing the characters from scratch.
An interview Tom Holland gave, which showed him reacting to the theory, has only fueled speculation further.
6. What Was The Radioactive Spider's Origin?
One notable difference between MCU Spider-Man and the other movie Spider-Men, is that we never got to see the origin story, where Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider. Perhaps, the reason why we haven't seen it yet is because it's connected to the larger MCU story.
What if the spider was the product of a Tony Stark-funded biological project? It would make Stark a father of sorts to Spider-Man, which could also explain his sense of responsibility.
Or perhaps, the radioactive spider is a product of experiments by another corporation from the comics, which specializes in biological and genetic engineering. If Spider-Man is going to be Marvel's new lead hero, then Norman Osborn and Oscorp may not be far behind.
7. Oscorp Tower?
And lastly, with Stark Industries moving to upstate New York, we still don't know who bought Avengers Tower, or what's going to be done with the iconic structure. This has led some fans to speculate: Who better to buy the building than Norman Osborn, who can remake it as Oscorp Tower? The trailer shows that at the current moment, the tower is under construction.
Assuming the upcoming movies will continue to feature New York City, the tower can't simply remain the way it is now. Oscorp Tower would signal a true, new beginning for the MCU, and center a debuting Osborn (and hopefully, the Sinister Six) as the Big Bads of the future.
