SNES-Style Controller For PC And Xbox One - Hyperkin X91 Impressions

By Michael Higham on March 21, 2017 at 11:00AM PDT

The Box and Controller

There’s a fine line between nostalgia and practicality when it comes to peripherals that pay tribute to past generations. The Hyperkin X91, branded as a “90’s style” gamepad, goes beyond novelty by being a fully functional wired USB controller for Xbox One and PC. Let’s run down our impressions of the X91 after extended use.

Controller Face

Despite being a small, retro-like controller, the X91 features two joysticks, a D-pad, and four face buttons plus start/select, which reflects the Xbox One interface. A bright white LED sits at the center to indicate that the controller is on and the Xbox home button sits above.

Face Buttons
Face Buttons

Face Buttons

The A, B, X, Y face buttons are slightly smaller than the normal Xbox One controller, but it’s not entirely noticeable. The buttons on the X91 have a distinct click and feel more responsive than the original controller.

Joysticks and D-pad
Joysticks and D-pad

Joysticks and D-pad

Both joysticks on the X91 have the full range of motion of larger controllers and protrude out of the face just the same. One difference is that the sticks feel a bit more stiff to move out of its dead zone compared to the normal Xbox One’s. Though it lacks a tactile click, the D-pad is soft and responsive which we prefer.

Triggers and Bumpers
Triggers and Bumpers

Triggers and Bumpers

The left and right bumpers on the X91 are actually an improvement over the normal controllers. Actuation of the bumpers is more consistent with a soft, yet tactile feel and offers more surface area.

However, the stiff left and right triggers fall short of matching the quality of Microsoft’s official controllers. They are initially soft to depress, but get progressively resistant as they bottom out. It feels like you’re fighting with a piece of foam that’s stuck inside the triggers.

Back of the Controller
Back of the Controller

Back of the Controller

With this being a compact throwback controller, it ditches the modern full-hand grips, which can make holding it tricky. It’s also slightly harder to make precise movements with the sticks since the controller is difficult to hold completely steady. There are deep grooves to help your fingers grip underneath the controller, but it’s an overall compromise with the retro-ergonomic design.

Cord
Cord

Cord

Unfortunately, the X91’s cord is thick and uses a heavy rubber casing, which is a curious design choice. Wired controllers are better off with a braided cable to avoid kinks and tangling. The weight of the cable also hampers ergonomics as it anchors the otherwise lightweight controller downward. You can try to mitigate this issue by resting it on a surface that's at the same height as your hands.

Audio Jack
Audio Jack

Audio Jack

A convenient 3.5mm audio jack for headphones and earbuds lies under the controller.

Dimensions
Dimensions

Dimensions

The X91 measures at about 5.8 inches wide, 2.8 inches tall, and 1.9 inches deep.

Overall Experience
Overall Experience

Overall Experience

After spending hours using the Hyperkin X91 with several games, we feel that it works great in many cases. Any game that doesn’t require precise aim or a series of quick reactions may benefit from a light, compact controller. Castle Crashers and Shovel Knight were a great fit and it worked well for a quick match of Rocket League. However, precision is important for more serious matches and it’s ultimately not the best choice for comfort and accuracy as we felt when playing Doom.

The Hyperkin X91 functions well overall and does some things better than regular controllers--D-pad and bumpers--but its form isn’t ideal for every situation.

It’s available now for around $30 from several retailers. GameSpot was provided with the controller courtesy of Hyperkin.

This is a good collectable item. Plus is cheap and is not the usual $59.99 or up to $79.99 for a Microsoft controller. To tell you the truth I would not have mind paying the extra $20 or $30, if Hyperkin would have charged $50 for this controller. If it means higher quality controller I pay the $50 or $60 for the controller.

The D-Pad looks a little too far away. :/

It also doesn't look as functional as the SNES D-Pad. I hope I'm wrong because I'm still on the hunt for a good D-Pad to play 2D fighting games with.

@jumpactionHistorically the best d-pad in creation is the Sega Saturn controller's d-pad. It's legendary. I play fighters on PC with it, used to play fighters on PS3 with it too.

    It's also unbeatable for any 2D side-scrollers/platformers/shmups.

If you're trying to find one of the authentic official Sega USB Saturn controllers, it's going to be difficult. There are plenty of lame knock-offs out there right now with shit parts, thanks to the originals becoming rare and sought after.

In fact, if you don't know how to correctly identify a true "SLS" branded genuine USB Sega Saturn pad, you might be better off finding a console Saturn controller in good shape and buying one of the well-regarded Saturn>USB converters.

TL;DR: among all 8-bit/16-bit/32-bit to present day controllers, the size, design, and feel of the Sega Saturn d-pad makes it a legendary 2D gameplay powerhouse of precision and comfort.:

D-pad is still the crappy XB d-pad that is really a stick with a d-pad cover. The SNES dpad is still the best.

    @orochipunisher: Neither 360 or XB1 D-pads had a stick underneath.

360 used a rubber mat with capacitive pads, same as PS2/3. Somehow, it felt a little different and the mat would get misaligned.

XB1 controllers have 4 little "trouble bubble" mounds that act as switches. That's what gives that snappy, audible & tactile feedback. It is possible to crush them if you go nuts.

It looks like the D-pad is way too close to the center. This obsession so many controller makers have with putting the D-pad under the left analog stick instead of the other way around is so annoying. Even Nintendo does this, and they're the ones who originally popularized the modern controller with shoulder buttons and ergonomic design with their SNES pad. I'm glad at least Sony continues to design controllers the way I like them.

@Dualmask: I think most companies that make controllers now use the xbox controller design because its....better. nobody is making a copy of ps4 design because its just not as good. im not saying its bad just now as good. Nintendo pro controller amazon fire controller even controllers for rc cars have xbox style controllers. people use that layout and design because its better. sony has the same design from ps1 and its fine to.

If that d-pad isnt' immaculate then it's game over.

Whacking ha-do-ken's out willy nilly was what made a snes pad the one to want and a mega drive pad was how you shouldn't do it.

So long as the price is in line with the 90's i'll be looking to invest, no one has gotten pads right for some time.

This looks really cool, but I'm really looking for a controller with paddles on the back.

Anyone know a cheap controller with back paddles? I don't really want to pay $150 for an “elite” controller just because of a button on the back and because it's heavy.

@naryanrobinson: hahaah that is a fair point.

I'd say pair up and configure a ps4 pad, they're pretty much the best that's on offer at the moment.

Plus you could configure it as a steering wheel for driving games which is a nice added bonus.

Personally i use an xbox one wireless controller, came with my oculus, kbm for fps games unless it's single player, steam controller for steering and lazy games and oculus touch for touch.

@dladz: I've already got a generic no-brand Chinese wired gamepad which is cheap but works, a Logitech F310, an official 360 wireless controller, a pretty good fake wired 360 controller, an official wireless XBOX ONE controller, a USB Gamecube controller for emulation and Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.

Now I'm looking for a controller with paddles on the back, so I can hold them down easily without really moving. I'm a big Devil May Cry player. I think it would help out a lot.

@naryanrobinson: The steam controller has paddles, I've never really gotten the hang of the pad, perhaps as I'm getting older and have less patience, I've no doubt that it's a good controller but I've not really given it a full chance.

Works superb for driving games using the accelerometer, maybe it might be worth investing for you?

Even if it doesn't work out, it'll work out great for driving games and navigating windows from the couch is pretty well done too.

@moonco: I bought a Bluetooth controller from a Facebook ad called the 8Bitdo SNES30 Gamepad that looks and feels so much like the original SNES controller, it's borderline criminal. The only problem is it's a bit too faithful to the original design and has only one set of shoulder buttons and no analog sticks--it was meant to be a duplicate of the SNES pad of course, but I wish it had a bit of modernization. Still feels great to play 2D games with on a PC with a micro-USB and even works fairly well for emulators on my mobile phone.

@moonco: I'd say believe about 85% of the hype of the Buffalo SNES controller. It's a good controller... really good, but its got two little issues that prevent it from being perfect.

#1, the face buttons aren't sensitive enough. It has a perfectly tactile push to the buttons... it's not the kind of button where you're going to register a press by accident. So in that case, why the button doesn't register at all when you push it down lightly is a mystery to me. Like I can feel it go all the way down but it doesn't register unless I put a touch of force into it. It's really strange. I played Chrono Trigger from start to finish with one a few weeks ago and I frequently found myself absent-mindedly tapping the A button during battles and the button wouldn't register until I put some more weight to it. I have two of the things and they both seem to have this issue. Maybe these things are built to last and can take the abuse, but I'm still in the mindset of expecting these things to break within a few weeks simply because of its cost and it being third party and that might be unfair of me when being gentle with them.

#2, the diagonals on the d-pad feel too tight. Sometimes I have to slightly adjust my thumb to get it to register, but maybe I'm still getting used to using one of these and that will come with time. Maybe I should give Contra a try to really put that to the test, but for right now it feels just a touch off to me... like it's not 100% natural.

@jinzo9988: I definitely agree with #2, the diagonals feel too narrow sometimes. Still though, aside from wiring original snes controllers into the gpio these buffalo usb controllers really are great for a retropie.

looks great for tossing into your backpack to bring with you if you have a gaming laptop but it would need a tight case to keep the joysticks straight during travel. I can't be the only one concerned about the joysticks being rekt when a controller is loose in a bag

Isn't Hyperkin the company behind the Retron 5?

@xolivierx: Yeah the controller for the Retron 5 is utterly crap and mine died after a few sessions. Didn't care cause I use original legacy console controllers on it save 1 genesis controller. Here's the ironic thing though, they do make decent controllers for other consoles. I have a ProCube controller that works great for my Wii U and a Genesis GN6 which works wonderfully as well that I use on the retron 5. It weird they went so cheap and bad in design for the Retron 5 controller.
