Power Rangers debuted in 1993, taking action-packed scenes from a Japanese TV series, overdubbing some English and adding some "teenagers" hanging out in their high school. Also, Bulk and Skull. Power Rangers combined the awesomeness of Voltron with modern high school drama. I may have been a touch too old when the cultural tidal wave hit America, but I loved the show, nonetheless.
26 years later--I'm old--the series is still going strong, under the title Power Rangers: Beast Morphers. Hasbro sent us a box of their new toys to check out, and I have oh so many questions about what happened to the Power Rangers.
There were action figures, collectible minis, a zord, and even a Nerf blaster in the box, and we're breaking down what Hasbro is coming out with, and what worked and didn't work with the toys. At the time of this writing, price points were not revealed for the items we received.
Action Figure Packaging
As you saw in the last picture, here's what these toys look like in stores--but a closer look. There were four figures in this line, the Red, Blue, and Yellow Power Rangers and Tronic. Each of the figures comes with two weapons and a gauntlet, which can be used with a wearable power morpher.
Red Ranger
Pros: His blaster looks like a lion. I'm pretty into that. The figure design is sleek.
Cons: It's really hard to get the weapons into his hands.
Yellow Ranger
Pros: Again, I really like the design, and the figure is solid.
Cons: This is more on the character concept than the toy design, but the skirt on the costume is dumb. Can you even do sweet high kicks with that thing on? Also, the weapons are too hard to get into her hands.
Blue Ranger
Pros: More of the same. It's solid.
Cons: I'm just noticing now, but the eyepiece/sunglasses look a bit dumb. And again, it's hard to get the weapons into the hands of the toy.
Tronic
Pros: The character design is amazing. I love the detail on the toy.
Cons: This character isn't the singer of a '90s EDM/Alternative rock band. It's the Putty of this generation, which super bummed me out.
Beast Racer Zord
Admittedly, I was pretty bummed out that this wasn't a MegaZord, and I couldn't experience the satisfying moment of putting five smaller robots together into one large robot.
Beast Racer Zord
Pros: It seemed disappointing before I opened it up, but it's actually a really solid and well put together toy. You could throw this thing against a wall, and it wouldn't take damage. Did I try this? You'll never know. (Yes, yes I did)
Cons: I miss the frustration of trying to get weapons into the characters hands. Just kidding. I don't miss that.
Cheetah Beast Blaster
Hey! Nerf blasters! Again, I am very much into the idea of a weapon that looks like an animal. It comes with three darts, and it very much feels and shoots like a classic Nerf blaster, which is right up my alley.
Cheetah Beast Blaster
Pros: I really like how when you prepare the blaster to fire, the mouth opens up. You feed the animal blaster darts. Its sustanance is bullets. It's a nice replica of the Red Ranger's weapon.
Cons: I have no cons.
Beast-X Morpher
So all the action figures come with these keys that you can plug into this personal, wearable morpher. You can talk to it and say, "It's morphin' time," and it plays a song, which you can sing to yourself, alone.
Beast-X Morpher
Pros: I tend to find these things very dumb, mainly because they don't fit on adult arms, and I'm very disappointed with that. Luckily, this children's toy fit on my wrist. I may have yelled, "It's morphin' time" into my wrist way too many times. I am a manchild.
Cons: I need like five of these. I will wear them all over my arms and legs.
Micro Morphers
When it comes to the tiny side of Power Rangers, there are Micro Morphers and Micro Morpher Zords. It's blind bag toys that are very tiny.
Micro Morphers
Pros: They are very cute.
Cons: I might choke on them because I tend to think anything this small and cute is candy. Also, I know who Goldar is, but I'm clueless about these other characters.
Micro Morphers
Here is how small these things are. I'd like to note that I have very average-sized hands. I am not as big as Andre The Giant, nor can I drink as much as him in one sitting.
Micro Morpher Zord
Pros: It holds your Micro Morphers.
Cons: This is not my cup of tea. I had to put stickers on it, which was aggravating. I expected this to be a lot cooler, considering the tiny figures were so cute. This felt like nothing more than a carrying case.
I'm A Power Ranger!
If Saban ever needs a middle-aged dude who owns a Luchador mask to be a Power Ranger, I'm their guy. The Nerf Blaster and the Morpher accessory were top notch, and the action figures were pretty cool. The Micro Morpher stuff was not up my alley, but I find blind bag toys to be annoying, and this is coming from a guy who used to collect Upper Deck baseball cards during the '90s, hoping for a sweet Bo Jackson White Sox card. I also bought pogs, so that probably says a lot about me. I need to shave my neck. It's been a long week.
