As you make your way through Elden Ring's vast and dangerous Lands Between, you'll discover a heap of Spirit Ashes that can help aid you in battle. These spectral allies can dish out some excellent damage or simply tank some hits for you while you wail away on a boss or group of foes. However, as you might expect, some are considerably better than others.
Fanged Imp Ashes
The Fanged Imp Ashes summon two imps that sport low defense but can be excellent at putting pressure on enemies. Their attacks inflict bleed buildup for some huge damage, especially in the early game, and their nimble movement can help keep your foes busy while you back off to recover stamina or heal.
Mad Pumpkin Head Ashes
Much like the physical form of this foe, the Mad Pumpkin Head summon wears a giant helm that is immune to damage. This means that some attacks will bounce right off of his head, giving him a bit of extra defense against certain enemy types. Even better, his flail attacks cause bleed buildup, which can dish out some nasty damage with repeated hits.
Omenkiller Rollo Ashes
If you're up against well-guarded enemies, you'll benefit greatly from Omenkiller Rollo. This spirit ash can break the stance of most bosses with little effort so that you can deal some significant critical damage, and his AOE fire attack comes in handy should you ever find yourself overwhelmed by groups of enemies.
Skeletal Bandit Ashes
Especially prior to obtaining some of the game's absolute best ashes, the Skeletal Bandit can be an incredibly useful ally due to its ability to regenerate over and over even after being felled. Of course, it can be fully killed if an enemy hits it while it's in the process of rising again, so it's always important to draw aggro when it's temporarily down for the count.
Latenna the Albinauric Ashes
Latenna the Albinauric requires a bit of thought to use, but she can be an immensely powerful summon. Since she sits still firing her arrows from wherever you summon her, you can set her far away from a boss or group of enemies for some big extra damage while you engage them at melee range.
Greatshield Soldier Ashes
The Greatshield Soldier spirit ashes summons five soldiers with--you guessed it--greatshields. Due to the sheer number of them and their incredible defensive capabilities, they make the perfect tanking summon for magic users. They're very difficult for enemies to kill--just don't expect them to deal out much damage.
Banished Knight Oleg Ashes
Banished Knight Oleg has high defense and poise while remaining a viable source of damage, too. He makes a great tank, particularly in the early segments of the game, allowing you an opportunity to maneuver around behind enemies while he beats on them and breaks their stances.
Lhutel the Headless Ashes
Lhutel the Headless is arguably the best tanking summon you'll find in the game. She won't dish out as much damage as some other spirit ashes, but the sheer survivability of this ally is unmatched. She'll constantly teleport around foes while using her massive greatshield to protect her when they take swings, giving you ample time to do, well, just about anything you need to.
Black Knife Tiche Ashes
Black Knife Tiche is one of the game's most powerful options for a spectral ally. She doesn't pack a huge health bar, but her constant evasion makes up for it. Meanwhile, she doles out huge chunks of damage with her ranged attacks that can sometimes surpass even your own output, making her an invaluable tool against bosses who may be giving you trouble.
Mimic Tear Ashes
They say that if you want something done right, do it yourself. In a sense, that's what the Mimic Tear summon provides. This unique spirit ash summons an identical copy of your character and all of its equipment to accompany you into battle. It's tanky, dishes out solid damage, and even heals itself with consumables just like you. There's really no denying that this is the best option available for most builds.
