Adventuring in Fallout 4's wasteland can be tough when you're on your own. With so many threats that can endanger your life at any moment, it helps to have someone by your side to back you up. Luckily, like previous Fallout games, Fallout 4 features AI-controlled companions who can support you on your journey. Scattered across Boston's wasteland, there are 13 different companions you can find. Here's a guide on their locations, who they are, and what each one can do for you! **SPOILER WARNING: Characters from later game quests appear in this gallery.
: Sanctuary Hills
: Codsworth, your pre-war Mr. Handy robot, doesn't provide the strongest support in combat situations. But what he lacks in weaponry or offensive skill, he makes up for with his charming, unconditional loyalty.
: Robot Sympathy -- You gain +10 Damage Resistance against robotic energy weapons.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Codsworth.
: Codsworth praises nice and generous behavior, but isn't too fond of selfishness and chem use/addiction.
: Vault 114 in Park Street Station.
: Nick Valentine is a synth who runs his own private detective agency in Diamond City. As a skilled hacker, he can easily access higher level terminals for you. He's modestly equipped as a companion, using only his fists and his trusty revolver to fight off enemies.
: Close to Metal -- You gain one extra guess and 50 percent faster terminal cooldown when trying to hack.
- Perk Requirements: Gain max affinity with Valentine and complete "Long Time Coming" sidequest
: Valentine likes nice and mean behavior, but not in the extreme.
: Diamond City, Complete the "Reunions" sidequest.
: Piper is a hotshot reporter and journalist who runs her own newspaper called "Public Occurrences." While she's not the most offensively capable, she does know how to hold her own in a fight using her custom pistol.
: Gift of Gab -- You gain double XP for overcoming dialogue challenges and discovering new locations.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Piper.
: Piper admires generosity but also appreciates it if you're mean and assertive from time to time. She doesn't like peaceful or violent behavior.
: Scollay Square in the Town of Goodneighbor
: This ghoul and mayor of Goodneighbor is eccentric and relentless, but if you get on his good side, he can be a valuable friend and ally.
: Isodoped -- If you're at 250 Rads or higher, your criticals recharge 20 percent faster.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Hancock.
: While Hancock dislikes mean and selfish behavior, he has no qualms with violence. Additionally, he appreciates it when you act generously towards others.
: Red Rocket Truck Shop
: As your trusty canine companion, Dogmeat is capable of following special commands, like fetching items, investigating an area, or biting enemies. In combat, he acts as a decoy, easily attracting the attention of enemies.
: Attack Dog -- Dogmeat can bite and hold on to enemies, potentially causing them status ailments, such as bleeding or crippling a limb.
- Perk Requirements: As a standard perk on the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. perk chart, you need CHAR 4 in order to unlock its first rank. Subsequent ranks unlock at levels 9 and 25.
: Given Dogmeat's unconditional love for you as his owner, there are no specific decision qualities that increase his affinity.
: Museum of Freedom in Concord
: Preston Garvey is the leader of the Minutemen, a militia of wasteland settlers who defend those in need from the dangers of raiders. He seeks to establish a new society within the chaos of the Boston wasteland. Equipped with a custom laser musket, he offers ranged fire support on the field.
: United We Stand -- You gain +20 percent damage and +20 Damage Resistance when facing three or more enemies.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Preston Garvey.
: Garvey is a fan of decisions that are generous, mean, and peaceful. But he's most happy with you if you keep building settlements throughout the Boston wasteland. However, he doesn't tolerate violent and selfish decisions as well as chem use/addiction.
: Complete "Curtain Call' sidequest in Trinity Tower and unlock him from cage on top floor.
: Strong is a Super Mutant whose strength, resilience, and proficiency with heavy weapons make him a useful companion during a fight. Armed with a massive hammer, his brute strength is only matched by his growing love for the work of William Shakespeare and his yearning for the "milk of human kindness."
: Berserk -- When your health falls below 25 percent, you deal +20 additional melee weapon damage.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Strong.
: Strong appreciates generosity and peaceful decisions. But given his Super Mutant nature, he also doesn't mind the occasional violence. He isn't a fan of modification or anything involved with the Brotherhood of Steel.
: Cambridge Police Station
: Danse is a Paladin of the Brotherhood of Steel in the Boston wasteland. Equipped in a Power Armor suit that never runs out of fuel, Danse is a capable ally whose strength and tactical prowess makes him a valuable asset in combat. He's also your one way ticket into the Brotherhood of Steel, if you so choose to join its ranks.
: Know Your Enemy -- Your attacks gain +20 percent more damage against Super Mutants, Synths, and Feral Ghouls.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Paladin Danse.
: Danse generally likes kindness towards others and dislikes you if you're too mean or peaceful. He is also in favor of violent decisions when its for the cause of Brotherhood of Steel. If you join his faction, completing its missions and increasing its reputation will also win you brownie points with him.
: Old North Church, spell "railroad" on the crest with letters on the wall in the basement. Complete "Tradecraft" sidequest.
: Deacon is a member of the Railroad, an underground movement working to free sentient synths from their creators. He's proficient at sneaking and using disguises, and his perk is a massive help to you if your playstyle is focused on stealth.
: Cloak & Dagger -- You gain +40 percent to stealth duration and inflict +20 percent sneak attack damage.
- Perk Requirement: Gain max affinity with Deacon.
: Deacon appreciates kindness but isn't against mean behavior. He's not fond of violent decisions and chem use/addiction.
: Vault 81, complete "Hole in the Wall" sidequest. Talk to her and say you're Vault-Tec Security.
: Curie is a Mrs. Handy robot with a french accent that has become an independent researcher in the Boston wasteland. Her intelligence stats are high and she does well in combat as long as it's short-to-mid range.
: Combat Medic -- If your health falls below 10 percent, Curie will heal you by 100 Hit Points. She can only do this once per day.
- Perk Requirements: Gain max affinity with Curie and complete "Emergent Behavior" sidequest.
: Curie likes nice, peaceful, and mean behavior. However, she cannot stand selfishness and chem use/addiction.
: Combat Zone in Boston
: Cait is an Irish pit-fighter with a bad temper and an addiction to chems. While these characteristics don't sound ideal for a companion, she's actually a worthwhile ally to have due to her proficiency in lock-picking.
: Trigger Rush -- Your Action Points regenerate at an accelerated rate if your Health is below 25 percent.
- Perk Requirements: Gain max affinity with Cait and complete "Benign Intervention" sidequest.
: Cait appreciates violent and selfish behavior, but doesn't tolerate decisions that are generous, peaceful, or mean. She starts out supportive of chems but isn't happy with their use over time.
: The Third Rail basement, hire him for 250 bottle caps.
: MacCready is a Commonwealth mercenary who scavenges the land for a cure to an unknown disease. As a highly skilled marksman, he's capable of making precise headshots with his powerful sniper rifle.
: Killshot -- Your headshot accuracy in V.A.T.S. is increased by 20 percent.
- Perk Requirements: Gain max affinity and complete "Long Road Ahead" sidequest.
: MacCready isn't a fan of chem addiction and doesn't like nice, mean, and peaceful behavior. However, he does like violence.
: The Institute
: X6-88 is a synth that works for the Institute as one of its enforcers. He primarily uses energy weapons in combat, and thanks to his advanced synth abilities, he can also sense the presence of nearby enemies.
: Shield Harmonics -- You receive a +20 Energy Resistance.
- Perk Requirements: Gain max affinity with X6-88.
: X6-88 favors peaceful and selfish behavior, but does not like kindness and generosity.
