Avengers Endgame: Scenes From Trailers That Weren't In The Movie
Avengers: Endgame is arguably the most anticipated movie of 2019, and trailers have been coming our way steadily since December last year. It didn't take long for fans to notice that something funny was going on. It's not unusual for trailers to feature footage that isn't in the final movie, as they are often released before editing on a film is complete. However, in the case of Endgame, there were visible differences in the same shots between trailers, leading fans to quickly surmise that directors Joe and Anthony Russo had been actively altering moments for these promos. And based on last year's Avengers movie, we had reason to believe we were being deliberately misled.
While movie trailers have existed for more than 100 years, over the past decade, they have become much more than short ads for upcoming films. Anticipation for a first trailer is almost as great as a movie itself, and the opportunities to see trailer premieres have become a major draw of massive events such as San Diego Comic-Con, WonderCon, and Star Wars Celebration. As a result, trailers are studied, discussed, and analysed to a degree that might have seemed ridiculous only a few years ago, aided by the rise of YouTube and other video platforms.
The peculiarities with Endgame don't mark the first time the Russos have digitally manipulated trailers in advance of a movie's release. Promos for last year's Avengers: Infinity War had a number of shots that appeared differently in the released film--most notably, Hulk fighting in Wakanda, as well as altered dialogue from Thanos. The directors themselves admitted as much--stating that the Hulk scene was specially created for the trailer. So it's no surprise that the same is true of Endgame.
Now that the movie is in theaters (and annihilating box office records), we're able to confirm exactly what scenes from the trailers did and did not make it into the final film. Below, we've compiled all of the moments that are different--some are shots that were most likely cut from the final edit, while others are digitally altered shots, designed to hide the movie's big surprises and withhold information about certain characters and scenes. And if you've seen any more trailer moments that weren't in the movie, please let us know in the comments.

1. Empty Hangar
This shot is the most notably altered in the trailers, because it appears in different forms. In the very first trailer, the mood of post-Snap desolation is captured by a slow tracking shot of the Avengers HQ hangar, eerily empty. This shot never appears in the movie like this--the Avengers have been removed, and the shot is played backwards, the camera moving from right to left.
2. Avengers March
In subsequent trailers, this shot appeared closer to how it does in the movie--but still not quite the same. It now pans from left to right and features the Avengers at a distance, striding purposefully in their time suits. But they don't appear as they do in the movie--the trailer shot has them walking in single file, as opposed to side-by-side, and the silhouette of Thor is definitely not the somewhat larger version of the God of Thunder that appears at this stage of the film.
3. Where's Pepper?
This is a shot of Natasha, Steve, Rhodey, and Bruce outside Avengers HQ, watching as Captain Marvel brings Tony and Nebula back to Earth. However, it's missing one individual--Pepper, who's right there with them in the movie.
4. Where's Hulk?
Rocket opens the door to Thor's house in Norway. In the movie, Hulk is right behind him--but in the trailer, he's nowhere to be seen. The reveals of Hulk and Thor's changed appearances were kept a secret throughout the trailers, which mostly just used footage of both from the early part of the film.
5. Natasha Punches
One of two scenes that show Natasha training--presumably for the time heist--that didn't make it into the movie. In this one, she's working out with a punching bag.
6. Natasha Shoots
This is the other Natasha training clip that appeared in several trailers but didn't feature in the movie. In this one, she's doing some target practice. There are two shots included--from behind as she shoots, and then from the side as she reloads.
7. Thoughts in the Rain
Another missing Natasha shot. Here she sits in the rain, looking thoughtful. It appears like she's on the patio at Avengers HQ.
8. Altered Explosion
Hawkeye races through the corridor at Avengers HQ after Thanos attacks it, and a huge explosion sends him flying. In the movie, the explosion takes out several Outriders, but in the trailer, it's just orange flame with no flying body parts. You can actually see the movie version of this scene at the 1:35 mark in this 3D trailer, which was not digitally altered.
9. Shield Ain't Broken
There's a great shot of Cap tightening the straps on the back of his shield with shaking hands, that's used to create a dramatic moment in one of the trailers. In the movie, the shield has already been broken during his fight with Thanos--but in the trailer, it's intact.
