15 Video Games That Should Be Made Into Movies
1. God of War
A dark tale of mythic vengeance could dominate a summer movie landscape choked with tired reboots.
2. PlaneScape: Torment
This brooding old-school RPG about interdimensional travel (are you hooked already?) has one of the best stories ever told in the medium. Bonus points if a studio casts Mickey Rourke as the pock-marked, eternally-suffering Nameless One.
3. X-COM: UFO Defense
This could be Men in Black done dark, with the prerequisite chisel-jawed Marines pitted against the Sectoid menace.
4. Dynasty Warriors
These Romance of the Three Kingdoms-based action games have a whole epic’s worth of backstory, and a flashy visual aesthetic to build upon.
5. Katamari Damacy
One of the weirdest franchises of all time could make for one super bizarre film, thanks to a Prince’s demented quest to rebuild the stars by rolling up everything he sees. What's Spike Jonze up to?
6. The Walking Dead
Yeah, sure, there’s that TV show. But this excellent adventure game series leaves us with several compelling side characters whose fates would make for great big-screen viewing. A film could fill in the backstory nicely.
7. Deus Ex
The cyberpunk future dystopia of Deus Ex would make for a great summer actioner. Let's agree to just leave Keanu Reeves out of it, OK?
8. Sam & Max
The frenetic adventure-game duo has already been featured in a television series, but the big screen needs a smartly written pair of “freelance policemen” like these guys. Think buddy cop movie, but wittier.
9. Deadly Premonition
This extremely offbeat survival-horror title from the Xbox bargain bin could inspire a singular film experience, with its Twin Peaks-esque plot and eerie tone.
10. Elder Scrolls
Through five games, several expansion packs, and an MMO, Bethesda has turned Nirn into a richly detailed setting. Game of Thrones fans would likely come flocking.
11. Mass Effect
A Mass Effect film would almost inevitably end up following the game's main storyline. But a smarter studio should focus on other elements of this sci-fi world, such as the Skyllian Blitz, which would make a great movie.
12. Super Mario Brothers
This was tried once before, but, done right, Mario’s tussle with Bowser could be epic family entertainment. Don’t forget the Kart chase scene!
13. Shin Megami Tensai: Persona
The JRPG franchise already includes as an anime series and some animated films in Japan. But an American adaptation done in live action could do great service to the idea of troubled teens defending the world with summoned "personas.”
14. Grand Theft Auto
Rockstar Games’ signature franchise has shown surprising maturity, turning a series about running over prostitutes into nuanced stories about the American dream. A film would offer Rockstar a chance to show just how deep their story could be.
15. Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden
The oddball, free-to-download, retro-style game may be the only basketball-combat-RPG ever made. While most people would likely have no idea what to make of a film version, we would totally see that.
