"The name (was) Bond, James Bond."

From the start, I was skeptical. Sure, it was a great film, but would it translate into a 21st Century 3rd-person shooter? I kept my wits about me as I dropped the disk into the black tray. The infamous first opening level suddenly turned my opinion around.

The graphics are pretty nice for the PS2. Bond is the spittin' image of Sean Connery. The villains are, naturally, mundane and pretty general. Red Grant is a nice model, as well as other main characters. But some of the "heavy" guards are just cartoony. The levels all look different. The MI6 levels are humorous, with Q being added in.

The gameplay is nice. Almost exactly like Everything or Nothing, it is smooth and easy to pick up. The weaponry could be a bit bigger in number, but the ones there are fun to use. Ammo can occasionally be tricky to find, often resulting in necessary takedowns. The vehicles (Aston Martin, Jetpack, turreted-gun boat, etc.) are a little more difficult to manuever, but with a little practice are easy. So, the gunplay is great, the vehicles are pretty good, and the graphics are nice, too. So what is the stumbling block?
MULTIPLAYER

Although they made the smart choice of not allowing you to play as Bond, that is the only smart move here. The levels are either too large to find each other or too small to be competitive. The suspense is shot, with the other player's name visible through the scenery. The varied weapons in the story mode just leave gunplay to luck: whoever gets the better weapon wins. The jetpacks, unless all players are in them, are unusually hindering. Usually, the player on the ground can more easily take down the jetpack with a pistol. The pack isn't fast enough to counter it. There are some useless hazards, like a lowering floor. Some of my friends will refuse to play multiplayer with me, just because of its atrocities. So, that's what the game trips over.

Last Words: If you want a great Bond game for yourself, but it. But if you think you'll be getting a Goldeneye-calibur multiplayer experience, keep looking.
