I am a huge fan of the third person shooters and found this game by accident. I was looking for a cheap game to purchase on this website and stumbled upon Freedom Fighters. I saw the review ratings and gamer reviews and thought "hey, for 10 bucks at Gamestop it cant be that bad." I couldn't have been more wrong. Think, Star Wars Battle Front but set in New York city after the Russian army invades America. A very cool, yet unsettling, plot line for those of us old enough to have lived during the Cold War (yes I have been playing video games for a few decades). The story starts off in a very different global climate in which the Russians were the first to drop the atomic bomb during World War II and thus were able to "influence" the rest of Europe beneath the red flag. America basically stands alone in the world until the morning this game begins. You are a plumber headed to a job with your brother when the Reds begin their invasion. You realize the controls are precise as you start with just a plumbing wrench and the ability to swing it with authority. The cool thing with the game is you really get immersed into the action as you must find everything you need to survive. And by find, I mean pilfer off dead soviet soldiers. The missions are very involved and can be complicated as you go from one area to another in order to complete the main objective. The story stays true as missions get more difficult but not ridiculous. The squad based action can become intense as you find other fighters that are willing to join you and help you through the missions. I have played the SOCOM series and enjoy this squad based version more in that it is simply easier to use your squad mates. The weapons are very cool and true to life i.e: not every bullet hits its intended target, shotguns are useless unless you are close range, the longer you hold the fire button on automatic weapons the less accurate they are...etc. The variety of weapons also adds to the fun factor. The only down side is the short length of the game. It only took me a little over 25hrs to finish the game on the highest difficulty and would probably take less if you were a better gamer. Also, the inability to explore the map on your own. Although the map areas are large you are kept from unlimited exploration by the usual "road blocks". However, for 10bucks it cant be beat. There is a multiplayer versus version that is pretty cool because you can play as the Russians. Overall the game is a must own and personally I cant wait for the sequel. Until next time, keep playing.
