I heard that you would be able to eject the disc tray using the controller. How do you do this? I just got the update.

when you go to the game press x it will say eject on the bottom of the screen.

Unless they design a feature that'll actually change discs for you, too, I just dont see the point in this feature...

It's simple. Less physical wear and tear on the console.

Yes. Pushing the actual eject button over time contributes to the wear and tear of the console. Just as it does DVD players and the like, which is why they put them on remotes.
