I have recently purchased the Xbox Elite Controller. I did not initially go online and see how others were programming their controllers. I assumed that the best button for shooting initially would be the paddles. I realize the point of the hair trigger buttons is to shorten the press on the trigger, but I also recognize that the press on the paddles is still much shorter than the press on the triggers. That would make me assume that the button with the shortest press is the quickest. Am I wrong in thinking this? Any who, once I went online to actually read how others were programming their controllers I realize most if not all are using the trigger with the hair trigger response. Which once again, that button still has a lot of travel compared to the paddles. Does this make sense to anyone but me? Maybe there's something I'm missing here and I'd gladly like to know.

No I prefer using the triggers for "shooting", they feel more solid than the paddles. It is a matter of preference, that is what is cool about the controller you can customize it to your liking.

Also, I don't always lock the triggers because in some games, like Halo 5, it affects charge weapons(you cannot charge with weapons anymore if you lock the trigger). Again, there are no rules, you are not missing anything but for me I feel a better, more solid grip for shooting fast using the triggers instead of the paddles. Paddles would be for secondary things like crouching, changing gears, dashing/evading, etc.

Edit: also some games like Forza 6 use the rumble function on the trigger, and you could miss out on that by setting it to the paddle instead.

Great points! The only game I play at the moment is Black Ops 3 despite the fact that I have several others. I can see how configurations would differ between the games. I guess I am looking at the science of it. Even with the trigger locked I stare at the distance it has to travel to react vs the distance the paddle has to travel to react and that's a large difference. Although, yesterday I did mess around in the xbox accessory settings for the controller. I saw that you can make the reaction quicker on the software side. That was pretty cool!

I used the large paddle on right side as a trigger for a bit. It does have less distance to travel but the unclick and reset to rest is awkward for heavy fire fighting I found. I have broken both my hands in my life and my dexterity might not be what yours is TC. It takes dex and finesse of middle, ring or pinky, whatever is pressing the paddle in use in order to have tight controlled fire and I just don't have it in either hand.

@Alucard_Prime yeah I noticed with hair trigger I couldn't charge a plasma pistol. Did that happen to you?

@cainetao11: Yes if you engage the hair trigger then you cannot charge the charge weapons in Halo 5, only rapid fire them. It is not like that in every game though, I forget which other game I tested this with(I think Fallout 4 maybe) where the charging would still work even if the hair trigger is used.
