Hi, I'm new to this sort of kind of thing, but in 8 months, I could possibly get an xbox 360. I was wondering if you could offer me some solutions as to keep it cool. I know it's early, and I know you probably get these a lot, and I'm sorry, but I do need some help. Please?

The best thing is to leave it to the job. Just keep it in a well ventilated area - room around the back and sides and it should be fine!

I think the whole overheating issue is blown way out of proportion. Sure, if they are in a tightly packed area with no room for air and you have it on for over 8 hours straight, it might get too hot for my liking. However, the xbox 360 is meant to heat up to that degree considering what it is doing and as long as there is plenty of room around it for it to "breathe", it will be fine. Obviously there are cases out there of overheating, even when its got room but these are few and far between now and its mostly a scary myth thats left. :)

For better ventilation place it vertically unless it's on a high tabletop and could get knocked over easily.  You shouldn't have to buy something extra to cool the system, consumer electronics are designed to prevent themselves from overheating.

Just keep it ventilated like other people said, it's really not that big of a deal.

Did you not read what a few of us have already said? Also, it shouldn't matter which way you have it positioned as there are fans all around it. Mines is vertical if you want to know but it really doesn't matter too much.

My 2 cents worth:

1. Read, read, read. Google/yahoo/"insert search engine here" the topic for yourself. If you think the overheating thing is a "myth", you better do some research of your own. Check out the "broken xbox 360" thread up top. See how many pages it has? Do you think all those people are part of some conspiracy against Microsoft? If you read up on the issue for yourself, you'll find that the 360 is an unreliable piece of "consumer electronics". Ask the guys at best buy. Ask the guys at gamestop. Ask someone who has owned a 360 more than 8 months.

2. If you do decide on the purchase, get yourself a two-year warranty from the place of purchase. That's the "best way" to guard against overheating, in my opinion. Again, if you want to know why, just read that "broken xbox 360" thread.

You have 8 months - that's plenty of time to find out for yourself about the console, it's reputation, and how best to care for it.

Good luck - you're gonna need either that or a 2 year warranty.

Ok. I'll keep it ventilated, but is it ok to put it near a fan?

Also, anybody out there keep me updated on cooling solutions

You could put it near a fan but I don't see why you would need to. It's not like your Xbox 360 is gonna turn into a mini oven. Just keep the vents clear of any objects and it will be fine. Horizontal or vertical, doesn't matter.

Fans all the way around it? Not the 2 broken 360's I have taken apart. There are only 2 fans and they do a horrible job at cooling the 360.

Sorry, i guess i missed phrased it. I meant there are ventaltion holes all around it to keep the air flowing in and out.

Don't use cooling stations, my friends Nyko cooler melted onto his Xbox 360 and broke it.  My console is a launch console and still is working fine.  I just went to a LAN party and with all the 360s running it was a good 80 degrees in the house.  The 360s were left on from 5 o clock at night to 4:30 in the morning (So close to 12 hours Straight).  The consoles don't overheat, but rather the Copper Coolant system fails on some 360s.  Ether it isn't placed down properly or is defective.  This causes the chips to heat up rapidly and overheat.

No.

I'm not that anxious. I would never make my dad pay 80 bucks and tax more than a premium package.

I'll stick to my fan plan.

On second thought, I'll consider The Xbox 360 Elite with the 65 nm chips in the fall.

Man, I'm so excited
