Why are there ads on marketplace if we pay for it?

I hate the ads too.

No we wouldn't be cheaper if there were no ads. It could be free now. They only charge for it because they can. Why it is considered complaining, when you don't like something, anyway? It's not like it's not warranted. We pay for a service that others get for free. It used to make sense to pay for Live, but now, since they're using it as a means to sell us things, through marketplace, their payment structure no longer makes sense.

Xbox Live will be free. It's only a matter of time. Right now, Sony is no threat to MS's online presense, but over time, as things get better for Sony, MS will be pressured by the market to make a change. You can't charge for something your competition is giving away. The free market just doesn't work like that.

Pay more? That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

There weren't always ads on Marketplace. Microsoft added them in an Update. They can easily remove them in an update.

In any regard the ads are a bonus in my opinion because they alert you about new content on Marketplace.

I'll continue on with my thought.

You pay for clothes at a store. They put ad inserts in you bag when you check out.

You buy a book at Barnes and Noble. They do the same.

You buy a brand new PC, it comes with shovelware which is basically just an add to buy there product.

Buy a Magazine to read the articles that interest you, it's filled with ads.

... I'm thinking you don't understand that the whole point of ad marketing is to get in front of people. I'm sure that most of the times it's through tagging along with something someones paid for. Hence, live is like pretty much everyone else in this regard.

i do agree that sometimes they are annoying, but its something like what Bestbuy is doing to sponsor 5 FREE DAYS of gold, or the discovery channel sponsored Maps in Gears or the free "nissan" cars on FORZA......MORE POWER TO THE CORPORATIONS!!!

If you're referring to microsofts two competitors in the console arena, I'm going to have to disagree they are even close to catching up. I think we all know that there is nothing out there that offers the flexibility and ease of use in the console market as live does. I'm also betting that MS knows this, if either of the competitors actually offers as compelling of a service as live is I think MS will rethink there cost.

have you ever played on PSN and live, dont think so....let me explains the a few simple differences

1. Standard headset so almost everyone talks, and fantastic quality on the voice.unlike PSN where its a ghost town and even if someone has a mic they sound like darth vader or squeak like a rat.

2. Tons of demos and trailers, movies, tv shows, music vids, betas through market place. im playing the bioshock and stranglehold demo and the COD4 beta on PSN!!.......oh wait........umm, yeah

3. THERES BARELY ABYONE PLAYING!!! so i go to look for a match on r6 vegas, i could barely find any games, "oh everyones playing warhawk".....???,,,,so is there like 10 people on psn? i can still go on cod2 onlive(A LAUNCH GAME) and find a match in 5 secs

4. NO UNIVERSAL FRIENDSLIST!!!??? are you kidding me. i cant even pull up the so called friend list in the middle of a game, THEN WHATS THE POINT OF THE STUPID "PS" BUTTON??!!! if youre gonna rip-off the 360 guide button atleast do it properly.

5. I cant send cross game invites or see what my friedns are doing or start a chat with them or sent them a voice message in 2 secs, or see their game history or what they have been doing on their ps3....WHATS THE POINT OF HAVING A FRIENDSLIST ON PSN!!???

6. "oh PSN has dedicated servers....." THEN HOW COME SERVERS ON WARHAWK ARE**** ****!!!!!! why do they lower my rank when i try to join or say servers full when it says theres only 8 people in that match and do other BS stuff. sorry but ill take A WORKING p2p service over a HALF BAKED CHEAP EXCUSE OF A SO CALLED "dedicated server"

7. and it takes 7 mins to even enter the psn store and find the item i wanna buy, jumping over all sorts of adds and commercials, and WTF is that bull crap "virtual wallet", first its a hassel to register my credit card, then its a pain to confirm the purchase!!!! wow.....and it took me 2 mins to buy bomberman live....

... i can keep this rant going on and on, but im off to play some COD4 beta (the games awesome BTW) just ,make sure you play on live before making ignorant comments.

There is no question that Live is better than PSN, but first off, the gap isn't as wide as it was a generation ago, and secondly, I'm not really exclusively talking about PSN vs. Live. I'm talking about everything else, from PC to DS. Every service is free. Live is the only one that makes you pay to play.

All of the things you mention do make Live better sure, but that's not what we're paying $50 for. Yeah, having a headset is great...everyone has one...that's great too. But it came in the box with the 360. I'm not paying $50 a year for that. Warhawk dedicated servers are crappy. Fine, I'll concede....so am I paying $50 a year to NOT have dedicated servers?

Sony isn't there yet...no question. But they're making strides.

Also, it just doesn't make financial sense for MS in the long run. $50 per user is nothing, when compared to what they could be making by having more users with availability to their content. They could sell more games for an online component...they could have more systems networked to be able to sell content, either through video marketplace, add-ons, or arcade games. They can reach a broader audience (youth and casual).

I often feel frustration at the ads and I think I'm justified. I subscribe to Gamespot to avoid the ads: I'm happy to pay for exactly that reason. If there's one benefit we should have as Gold Subscribers to Live it's no advertising. The service is great, amazing even, but the ads for movies and chips are intrusive.

Remember, too, that we pay for most content -- it's not as though the ads are necessary to support watching movies or playing arcade games. I'd point out, as well, that we don't have control over the wallpaper in the marketplace blade and that this is often given over to advertising. I'd be less irked if the ads were strictly for 360 games and peripherals, but they're not. Paid subscribers should be able to skip the ads. I don't think that's unreasonable.

You are the ignorent one. All I hear from your "reasons" or should I say excuses are "blah blah, takes time to do things, blah blah" which does not make sense either. You just have to live with the fact that everything takes time. For instance, I have been waiting 5 hours until my next ****starts. What do you have to say about that? And as for the PlayStation Store (PSN) its great. Has more trailers and game videos compared with the ones on Xbox Live. I am no troll if you were wondering. I have both Xbox 360 and PS3 and think they are both great consoles with different advantages.

Um, why is that stupid? You're obviously not educated. Ads help subsidize things. When you pay for tickets to a football game, do you go the arena and not see any ads? Nooooo. There are ad banners all over the place. Are you whining about taking the ad banners down because you bought tickets?

There is no way to turn the ads on if you disabled them when making your account and no way to turn them off if you chose to keep them. Trust me I looked, I too would like to turn the ads on so I don't have to constantly look through the marketplace for new/free content.

I would also like to mention that if you have a Child's account, you will see no ads and there is no way to enable the ads again.
