Are there any dangers to which way you have the console standing?

the disc can only be scratched if you move it while it's on, i have yet to have a disc issue with my elite being vertical, and its been like that ever since it's launch. the vertical postition is better for ventilation

Keep in mind that different dvd drives are used by Microsoft. So that'll probably be the cause of this all.

@ Guiltfeeder566 -> Why not send it back? Get a brand new one, and maybemaybe some money back on the destroyed disks?

I have it vertical but horizontal is better because it has an extra vent on the bottom.

Ive had mine since launch and ive had it in both positions for over a year and nothing bad has happened.

My personal theory on the matter is: If your 360 is in a place that it can easily be tipped over, then horizontal it is, but I personally like having mine standing up. Really, if you are just really careful with it, and baby it then you shouldn't have any problems.

Vertical here bcoz of space and ventilation issues. Of course accidents happen just like what fatalfire said. But as far as no outside force is concerned, I had no problems with the vertical position.

I've had my 360 for over a year now, and I've always had it veritcal the entire time and it has never destroyed a disc (by itself at least). The only thing you need to be careful of is to not bump it when there is a disc in the drive. I did this the day i brought Forza 2 home and had to go get the fatty scratch buffed out because the disc was unreadable :(

i had my console horizontal at first.....then i got the RROD bcos it gets hot at the bottom....shift it to vertical and works fine ever since. i think putting it horizontal prevent from getting scratch disc but a risk of getting RROD as it gets hot at the bottom. Putting it vertical might prevent from getting RROD becos of better ventilation . But it gives u the risk of getting ur disc scratched..Newer consoles had the BenQ dvd drive....i had it.Runs smoothly...no scratched disc!

Horizontal for better ventilation. I could even install an external high-speed intake fans to prevent 3RL.

My system is kept vertical.

Vertical -

1. MUCH better ventilation - motherboard-side stays cooler (leave it on for 45 mins in both positions and see for yourself)
2. Low chance of disc scratching (needs to be positioned in a secure area. My console is on it's own away from my desk where it cannot be moved)

Horizontal -

1. Gets uncomfortably hot on the motherboard-side. (Internals must be scorching - may not apply to the 'Falcon' model)
2. No real chance of accidental disc scratching

My elite is vertical because of space issues, I heard the 360 draws in cool air from the bottom vent. Am I blocking the air flow in the vertical position?

*My friend has a funny setup, he puts 3 dvd cases under his 360 in the horizontal position. So no disc scratches and better ventilation I guess since its not sitting on its side and building up heat*

No you're not. There is a gap provided from the rubber feet which lift the console from the surface. Ever stood in an alleyway or between two buildings or walls on a windy day and noticed how fast air rushes past? Same thing applies. You're at least getting the same airflow I suspect.

When I compare my console in both positions, the heat doesn't dissipate properly/adequately in the horizontal position. As there is barely any fan grills on the side, (the bottom) gets too hot, imo. FACT -vertical is cooler and I imagine that goes for all 360's.That's the side that all the components are on i.e the motherboard, which is the major factor in RRoD due to heat build up.

Placing my hand at the rear of the console, I can tell there is a difference in heat output. I'd guess 10+ degrees. That's quite substantial.

A company such as Microsoft wouldn't manufacture a console that can be placed Vertical or Horizontal if one was amazingly superior to the other. I had my 360 Prem standing for 6 months, then I swapped to an Elite, going on for 5 months now standing still no disc scratching.. wait I lied, I have 1 scratched disc and that is BioShock and it wasn't scratched because it was simply placed Vertical, it got scratched cos my 360 got knocked off my PC tower and landed onto it's HDD breaking the HDD and denting BioShock.

^...but they did release a console that has a 'fundamental' (read: inadequate cooling system) design flaw. To me, there is a big difference that does depend on what position you place it in.

I personally, would not keep the system running horizontal for much longer than a few hours and that's just sitting at the dashboard.

Whoever says vertical is better for ventilation is dumb. Think abou it. Have you ever noticed the side that becomes the BOTTOM when its vertical is the main air intake. The back's the output and the side/bottom is the intake. Does pointing that towards the ground really seem smart for ventilation. Not particularly. I keep mine horizontal for that reasona nd it jsut seems safer (less likely to fall).

Maybe my opinion that horizontal is better, but not that it's better for airflow. That's just a fact. It may not be deadly for the intake vent to be pointing down since it has the feet, but it can certainly get air more easily if its pointing into the open. That's common sense.

Yeah its sad, everything else about the 360 is great. Definitely prefer it over my PS3. If the 360 had the same hardware reliability the PS3 and Wii wouldn't stand a chance IMO.

There is sufficient room in the vertical position to draw in the same volume of air. Having the intake pointing sideways doesn't increase the fan speed and it's 'pull'.

Have you even noticed that hot air rises? Have you ever noticed that the top of the Xbox when it's horizontal is solid plastic? Have you ever noticed that the top of the Xbox when it's vertical is ventilated? Have you ever noticed that you sound like a jerk when you call people dumb?
