K, let me clear something up here. That one out of three failure rate thing is BS. When that report came out, they meant that as of that report, about 1 out of every 3 Xbox 360s sold had gotten the Red Ring of Death. That doesn't mean that the failure rate of the 360s are one in three. Technically, the failure rate for the old consoles (launch until about the end of 2007) is 100%. EVERY 360 that is the launch model kind (90nm CPU, 90nm GPU) and is used regularly will have likely failed by now, or will very soon.
At the end of 2007 though, the 360 was revised to have a 65nm CPU, which runs much cooler. Those 360s are much more reliable than the crappy launch models. Now, a few months ago, another revision was made so that the 360 has a 65nm GPU as well. These run very cool, and are probably just as reliable as the PS3 and Wii. Seriously.
So, old 360s: 100% of them will fail because they suck, new ones I have no clue what the failure rate is. Probably around 2% like the Wii and PS3. So basically, yeah, buy one.
