ok so i may be buying a 360 from my friend's friend...but what happens if i get the dreaded ring of death? am i totally screwed? should i save up and buy one for full price fron a retail store so i get the warranty? what should i do?
I would highly recommend AGAINST buying a used console of any kind. You should definitely save up and not only get one from a store but get the warranty too. IF the red rings show up, you'll be much happier that you had waited.

I would save up and buy a new one. My 360 was fine for 11 months. 5 Days before the warranty was up it went. I got lucky. Another week I would have been out.
i say buy a new one that way you have the warrenty and you dont have to worry about everything crapping out on you. ive had mine for about 3 months now and play the hell out of it and it hasnt done anything except slow down a little bit when i load up oblivion
