Ok I'll say it, Gears of war 3 campaign was mediocre.

Just beat it, really unimpressed. Love this game for its multiplayer. Yet, really can't believe how terrible the campaign overall has been. 1 wasn't that great, and it blew 2 away imo.

edit: the story i thought was good not great. But the development and certain plot points were done soo porly. Not to mention Marcus, still unlikeable after 3 games tsk tsk. Gameplay though was really repetitive at some points, and with teh turrets it was just awful.

Overall out of 10 this campaign is a 6.5 for me. maybe 7 on a good day.

I liked gears of war 1, nice gameplay didn't mind the story, and I think gears of war 2 went bigger and better. Haven't played gears 3 but this seems to be a nice trilogy.

Personally, I thought the campaign was awesome! probably my favourite one of the three, actually :). Although, I'm not 100% sure on that, as Gears 1's campaign was awesome too (as is Gears 2 as well, really :P). The only thing that I could really say negative about Gears 3's campaign is the fact that it wasn't as long as Gears 2 (but then again Gears 2 seemed REALLY long). It is probably a little bit longer than Gears 1's campaign, which isn't a bad thing, it's just that Gears 2 had a really long campaign, and so I wonder why Gears 3 didn't. A great trilogy overall, I think :). There also appears to be some DLC in the future for the campaign (as I am sure you have all noticed, it says "coming soon". I can't wait for that, and I can't wait for DLC for multiplayer! Gears 3 is probably my GOTY :D.

I disagree, but that's okay. The only thing I thought about the campaign was that mission objectives were usually repetitive fetch quest type mission objectives, like flip a few switches or something, but the overall gameplay and set piece battles were fantastic. However, everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I really liked it and thought it was the best out of the trilogy. Lengthy and very well executed.

I thought it was fantastic, although at times the gameplay seemed repetitive - loved the cutscenes and characters Like most people above, what campaigns do you enjoy? Because this is head and shoulders above other shooters campaign IMO, and many other games..

I agree with the OP. The plot was terrible in terms of what happens to Dom, the massive gaps in the story (I'm not going to read the books), the railgun segments, and the repetitiveness of looking for objects. It always felt like the acts were too long as I progressed through. But then again I bought it mostly for the multiplayer. The dedicated servers were the deciding factor.

that sums it up pretty well for me. the dom scene was ruined by marcus's reation (so now epic is gonna develop marcus after 3 freaking games!?) that scene though was saved by the music. But the ending as well. It was just so poorly done. They expect you to understand anya and marcus's relationship rather than developing it.

The key diff being that one is an RPG and SP only if your talking about the first. When i say shooter i mean games like COD, BF, Halo. You cant seriously expect them to be able to tell an rpg type story in a straight up shooter. They just aren't that long and are more focused on the action. As far as shooters go Gears 3 is top notch. Of course i go and say hey Dues ex has better story or Fallout out those are story driven RPGs and a completely different type of game from a shooter.

the campaign was good to me, I just wished they revealed a lot of questions I had, like why queen Myrrah looks like a human, what exactly are the sires? and I felt unnecesary parts like the whole act looking for oil, there were other things going on in Sera (like Cole and Baird looking for reinforcements) it's some point I think they could improve IMO but guess that's what the "coming soon" is for.

i agree with doubalfa the game really didnt answer enough questions, i personaly felt some of horde where under used and thought some of the horde beasts could be used more in the game like locust insects, riders having more fun with the silverbacks would be good.

expansion pack please - answers / forgotten chapters / extra levels! / new characters / perhaps a new game mode?

Bioshock was redundant and lame (talk about repetitive). I couldn't even finish the first one. The 2nd one was even worse. The 3rd one shows promise, though. In any case, it is no comparison to the epic greatness that is Gears3.

I thought the gears 3 campaign was amazing! Loved it, really had nice twist, the ending a touch mediocre but hey awesome none the less......all I ever hear is people complaining about the single player these days...its all about multiplayer. multiplayer, multiplayer. The new generation of gamers just don't know. I like multiplayer, but geese I have a few friends a bit younger me that play Gears, CoD:BO, Red Dead etc....and havent even touched the single player cause they say its boring...WTF.

I liked gaming when it was less mainstream and I was a dork for being a gamer....at least back then games were almost always quality, they were fun, I didn't have to listen to people complain about singleplayer...I didn't pay 60.00 to play just mulitplayer, and really who in there right mind would.

Mediocre? Thats insane. The campaign and story may be nothing like Uncharted but it is definitly the best Gears game and one of the better games of this year. I thought the writers did a pretty good job with the story especially the moments with Cole and Dom and the campaign had some pretty good setpieces and locations instead of being all underground or at night.

You have reminded me about something. It felt like Cole and Baird weren't in the game a little TOO much. There was a MASSIVE gap, that's how it felt anyway. So yeah, with this coming soon stuff, I hope it's Cole's parts which shows what they would have been doing during the very long Marcus parts :).

I'd have to agree. Gameplay-wise, Gears of War 3 is best in series. I'll give it that.. but the campaign left too much unexplained. Don't get me wrong, the campaign was fun. I liked the variety of levels and sequences but it meant nothing because it had poor character development, and it left me with too many unanswered questions. Marcus and Anya's relationship? Queen Myrra? What's the story with her? She's human, but locust? Unaffected by the blast? Adam Fenix... he had an awful script... This was suppose to be father and son reconnecting after so many years.. and this was it?! I didn't feel any emotional engagement. That sense of struggle like the trailer ushered in Ashes to Ashes.

The Stranded section was very well done - meeting Griffon was pretty damn cool. But other than that, it was just waves and waves of Lambent.. opening 100 slamming gates.. I was more impressed with Gears of War 2, if you asked me honestly. At the end, I felt like something big was missing. Like Halo 3's ending.. I was left wanting more. Too many unanswered questions. The ending kinda closed out off-beat, and it was awfully a short ending for what is suppose to be the last Gears of War game. Is it really over? Are the locust and Lambent completely gone for good? I don't know.. something just isn't right.

I would also have to disagree. It is not the greatest campaign ever or nothing, but it was most definitely a blast to play through & I'm looking forward to running through it again. If I have a lot of fun playing through a campaign & it was good enough to wanna play it again then I will always label it a success.

Again campaign was great and best in series imo.

The only thing dissapointing about it is a lot of unanswered questions, cheesy end game cutscene and some enviroments are too similiar to Bulletstorm.

Other than that it's great.

It was wonderful campaign to play, but.............

1. Dom died in one of the most lackluster ways ever.

2. What about the queen? Why does she look human? What really happened to the locust? Are the gone for good?

3. Adam Fenix was lacking character and was very dull. We still dont know the history between him and the queen.

4. What about the sires from GeoW2?

5. Easy boss fights and the Queen was probably the easist.

6. Anya and Marcus? Relationship?

7. What happened to Griffin?

8. What else was happening on Sera?

9. Where did Baird and Cole get the extra reinforcements?

Here's the thing: The campaign in Gears of War 3 is great for the genre it's in. You keep talking about Bioshock, but there is no relevant comparison between GoW3 and Bioshock. GoW3 is a third-person shooter. Straight up, nothing else to it. Bioshock is a first-person action-RPG. There can't be the same type of story and character development in a shooter and a RPG. That's not the point and purpose of the game.

That being said, Gears 3 did leave a lot of gaps. A lot. They leave you with a lot of questions. But to what purpose? I like the fact that Epic allows you to develop to answer the questions for yourself. I get to pick why some of the things are the way they are. I get to decide why X happended instead of Y or Z, or the answers to A & B. If you don't like questions unanswered, you probably don't like Christopher Nolan movies either.

Lastly, you're ignoring the things that the campaign does do well. They integrate more characters, they take the player to more interesting and dynamic locales, and they added some really cool new features to the game (Silverbacks, gas barges, etc.). The stuff GoW3 does great, it does really great. You also should factor in the fact that you can experience it in 4-player co-op now. And playing through that campaign, watching the cutscenes with your friends... That's an awesome experience.

Is the GoW3 campaign perfect? No. But it is really good for the genre that Gears belongs to. In my opinion, it's the best in the series, and it's my favorite story I've ever played through in a pure third or first person shooter.

edit: the story i thought was good not great.

I disagree, I thought it was quite good, not mediocre.

my problems with the campaign were that it was incredibly easy (you really can't die, even on hardcore, cause teammates pick you up) and that there's so many open plot holes

for instance, why the hell is the queen human? (or at least part human). i was really looking forward to an answer on that one

people tend to lack the fact that comics and novels both canon are made of GoW
