That's why you dont base a games score on 1 reviewer only. I think Gamespot gave it a score of 8.5 because they felt it was right. Just like Assassin's Creed, I agree with Gamespots review and not so much IGN's. Just because they didn't give it a 9.5 or a 10 does not mean you should stop visiting Gamespot for gamescores.

you have to realize that only one persons opinion. i dont listen to the score they give it i listen to the positives and negatives thrown out there. all they are is information on the games strenghs and weaknesses. they also have user reviews which is awsome because we can give our own and together combine our ratings to show the real 8.5 or 9.5 scores. game spot im sure does not have that much staff and are limited to what they can do. in my opinion video reviews are a bonus on top of all the news, videos and tournaments they have.

I haven't played Mass Effect yet so I can't comment, although I did think it was going to receive better than an 8.5... And I do partially agree with you on the quality of Gamespot's reviews lately. I thought the used to be much much better, and I hate that they did away with the rating breakdown (Graphics, Gameplay, Sound, Replay Value, etc...)

I'm beginning to believe that only one person is getting to be the reviewer for any given game, where as in the past I felt that Gamespot's reviews seemed to be a more collaborative effort, and seemed to gather opinions of a multitude of staff members condensed into a single, solid review. I feel like they should have a group of "specialists" for each particular genre that collaboratively come up with elements they like and dislike about the game... and perhaps gather outside opinions from other genres' specialists to give an outsider point of view, and then have one review written up incorporating the group's opinion. Perhaps even find a staff member or two that generally don't like the game's genre, and get their opinion on it... I mean isn't that when you can tell a game's really great... when someone that usually has distaste for a particular genre actually gets a little change of heart when they play a game from that genre?

I really do think that GS should bring back the rating breakdown... I mean there's room for it on the review page and it was something I feel like most people want to see when they are looking at a game's review.

The scored breakdown box they used to have is what I meant when I was referring to breakdown.

I think we're all guilty of sometimes being so hyped up about a game that we really don't give two s***s about what the review says because we're just going to buy/rent/play it anyway...

But in the back of your head you still want that reassurance... and it's nice to be able to pull up the first page of the review, see the main score and the scored breakdown of the different aspects of the game without spending the precious time you need to be spending driving to go get the game reading 2 or 3 pages of a review.

Sometimes the review is for later, ya know?

i have to agree, I dont turn to gamespot anymore for reviews because it seems to me that whenever there are games that are all about hype they rate them higher than actual good games that didnt get alot of press and television advertisement. they gave assassins creed a 9 when it was really worth being a good 8 thanks to the repetition. mass effect gets an 8.5 thanks to a few bugs? its nonsense. also its like how they rated the twilight princess game for the wii. they gave it an 8.5 because there wasnt any speech in the game which was also nonsense because it didnt hurt the gameplay.

I was really hoping it would at least rank higher then Gears Of War... because I'm Tired of Gears being the top rated 360 game on Gamespot... BioShock or Halo 3 should have knocked it out of it's place.

dude its not like gamespot doesn't like the game its just the game. the are not biased . they know what makes a good game and what doesn't. U can go and read other reviews if u don't want the a professional review. I know that sometimes i don't agree with what they say but after a while u can understand why they reviewed it the way they did.

^ yet its okay to respect their 9.0 for assassins creed even though the game gets repetitive after about 3 hours of game play? its impossible to listen to their review for mass effect or anything else when the games that get the most hype have the highest scores yet have more flaws in them than a teenage girl committing substance abuse.

i stopped taking them seriously since they implemented the .5 system....well before that honestly... but the .5 thing just annoys me... i go by multiple reviewers, and by user reviews...

it is so obvious that the ME review wasnt a "pure\neutral" review , believe me , like i wrote in the game forum , in AC they praysed everything and then said "ohh yeah and there are "some small issues" " while in ME they went right to the small problems , that BS , ill never watch Kevin's reviews again , gonna watch anybody else

See, i find the video reviews more useful than the actual number given to the game. Hearing someone talk about the game, talk about the gameplay is soo much better than just looking at 8.5

Its quite hard to judge a game on its merits and not on personal opinion.

I can't believe all these GS reviews are stupid or biased threads on different forums. You mean just because it doesn't agree with the score YOU think it deserves, that means this site is biased or stupid? What about those that also feel that way--does that mean they're wrong for not thinking like you? get a life--it's a review, an opinion. If a score affects the way you play or buy a game, you're more pathetic than you know.

Even beyond what has already been said in this thread. An 8.5 is a really high score. Its started to seem for a while that EVERY game was getting a 9+ score. What is that? How am I to tell what games are supposed to be high quality if they are all scored at "perfect"? I like how Gamespot has begun to scale back their ranking system to match with how games actually are. Every game has flaws and places to improve.

I am heading to the game store in a few hours to pick up my copy of Mass Effect. Im going to love it. And I also dont give a crap that Gamespot didnt give it a perfect 10.

So has anyone who's bashing gamespot's reviewing system actually played the game? Maybe there is a reason it only got an 8.5.

But ... I do wonder sometimes about ad revenue going towards the ratings. IE, Halo 3. How much money did Bungie throw at gamespot in advertising? You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours possibly??

Then why are you here? A review is an opinion. Gamespot's opinion is generally harsher than other opinions. Get over it.

And consider this:

If Gamespot can't have an opinion (even one that differs from the general populace) then why should you?

i dont see why people are getting so mad at the guy who reviewed Mass Effect, if you watch the video and read the text theres more praise in there than "The Good and The Bad" box let on. hes not saying its a bad game, it just has some annoying bugs in it. i use gamespot reviews, game trailers, X360 magazine for my reviews and base the games on the average scores with each review.

I really think people put to much into other peoples reviews. There just reviews so relax. It's not like its law or anything important. Good Greif...Play the game 4 yourslef and rate it yourself. At least you would be following your own review rather then someone elses.

Gamers Game...Fanboys Pick SIdes.

I try not to worry about the number anymore versus the actual context of the review. I for the most part find that the numbers do not match up well with the actual review, regardless of who reviews it.

I have an uncanny ability to see into the minds of all the GS users. Just last night I saw a dude who just picked up his copy of Mass Effect, played it for a bit, liked it and then stopped to find like minded individuals (namely Gamespot reviewers) to reinforce their smart buying decision.

Upon gracing the site, they see "Mass Effect Review" and they spring a little chubby, just knowing that Gamespot shares his opinion is enough to get the blood rushing.

Then all of a sudden that smile and upward stiffness turns to frowns and droopiness as Joe Blow Gamer sees a reprehensible score of 8.5.

"But, but.....but" says the gamer, all kinds of emotions and questions run through his head. Did I waste my money? Am I unintelligent when compared to Gamespot? Is there something wrong with me?

"I don't know if I like this game anymore!!!!"

"No! Wait! I love it more than anything and I need a forum in which to express my love, people must know I didn't waste $60 and more importantly, know how inaccurate and BIASED Gamespot is!!!"

Rinse, repeat change title of game, nerdyness of gamer and ineptitude of Gamespot and you have this forum since August.

Uneducated people don't realize that reviews are based on opinions, and to each their own and personally, I think 99% of the gamespot reviews have bad taste in videogames.
