why did u rush the system and why when ps4 does don't u support 1080i??!! I never said anything about this before hand, the dolby situation u did and waiting on a pach, but not that ur not supporting 1080i. I read you that since sports seem blurry in 1080i u don't support it?!

720p is not 1080 Microsoft! please release a patch for this like ur dumb dolby problem. im so mad

I have the same problem. My TV is only 720p or 1080i, so I'm missing out on the extra definition. What's worse is that my TV set-top box output supports 1080i, so if I want to use the TV passthrough, I have to change the settings to make the picture worse to match the 720p output by the xbox.

As for the MS comments: I didn't notice any issue with the graphics when playing F1 2013 in 1080i on my Xbox 360.

However, I'm not going to rush out to buy a new TV for some extra resolution, or to get a TV that can display that 'closed eye' in the calibration settings.

Better not get a PS4 either because it doesn't do 1080i either.

Honestly, I'd never even heard of a TV that did 1080i but not 1080p until these threads.

unless they are rocking old CRT HDTV's, but most likely they are mistaking the accepted resolutions on their LCD HDTVs. A lot of LCD's have a native resolution of 1366 x 768 and list that they can accept 720p or 1080i signals. And M$ is right, you will bet a better image quality out of 720p compared to 1080i. First off, your LCD HDTV is progressive; second, it can't display 1080i as it's a 720p res (or 1366 x 768) which is just a smidgen above 720p so the extra definition that 1080i would grant is wasted and not only that your harming your image quality by sending an interlaced signal to your tv, making your tv have to convert the interlaced signal to progressive and then down convert it to 720p.

Like I said, unless all these people have older CRT HDTV's (or projection HDTV's that have CRT tech in them) that can only go up to 1080i, they are just mistaken that their TV can accept a 1080i signal, but can't actually display it.

(The one exception I can think of, I think the very first 1080p HDTV's were progressive, but only accepted a 1080i signal. Don't quote me on that, but now that I think about it those might have existed)

Why would you ever use 1080i? Interlaced = yuck.

Because that's TV stations broadcast in. ABC and FOX are 720p, NBC and CBS are 1080i. No stations actually broadcast in 1080p except a few pay-per-view.

@magicalclick: That may be true, but to me on my home theater system Dolby Digital and DTS sound better than uncompressed audio.

i did 720p on the first xbox with component cables playing Steel Battalion 9 years ago, this just plain unacceptable in this day

720p is better than 1080i, that's why there isn't support for it. You guys should learn a thing or two about technology before making threads like this. It's embarrassing.

My CRT HDTV that weighed three tons back in 2003 had 1080i. Good times. Sounds like you should have dropped $500 on a new HDTV instead of a new game console. If you have both 720p and 1080i, then 720p is, as a matter of known fact, the better resolution. (don't let the higher number fool you)

Further more, those. 720p flat panels they were using to phase out CRT couldn't touch the contrast of a 10801 CRT. They just looked much better on Best Buys sales floor because the television presets are jacked to the max to create shock and awe in a bright showroom.

1080i was not phased out because the industry found 720p to be better, it was phased out because flat panel televisions cannot do an interlaced display. The CRT was also only phased out because of its bulk.

What really sucks is most 720p sets were never even. 720p to begin with. They are 768p meaning the source material will never be viewed native and us always scaled.

The Xbox One does DTS 5.1 so there is no need for Dolby Digital 5.1 for sound.

My CRT tv's will display 1080i natively, and they have far better image quality than LCD or plasma. The cathode rays will not scan fast enough for 1080p, though. I definitely want a patch for 1080i...

When so many people have gaming headphone setups that only process Dolby Digital, it certainly is an issue that only a fanboy would deny.

On the Xbox 360, PC, PS3 and PS4, I can enjoy my Astro Mixamp using 7.1 Dolby Headphone in all its glory. On the Xbox One however, my $450 headphone setup is going to be inferior to every other platform because it will only process Pro Logic II from a two channel source and not the much superior Pro Logic IIx which comes from Dolby 5.1. One should expect a $500 gaming system to be able to do this.

I am not a fan boy as I have had many different game consoles over the past 30+ years of my life that I have played video games. I currently have an Xbox360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, and a gaming PC that I spent about $1000 for over year ago. I have played a lot of games as well.

Well then you can't really say Dolby 5.1 is unneeded since more receivers and headphone processors support Dolby than they do DTS.

why would you want to play a blurry game?

DD is dated and limited. The stuff that only supports DD is either extremely old, extremely cheap, or extremely crap. They aren't going to encode sound in a format for people like you.

The vast majority of surround sound headphone setups use Dolby Headphone as well as 99% of the gaming headsets and mixamp devices. If DTS Headphone X one day became the standard, it would be ok to drop Dolby but until that happens, there is no reason to be a 16 year old boy, defending his fangods decision to not pay for the licensing.

Sony's 50" LCD HDTV was 1080i only. It died on me after 2 years. Well, not really died, but a huge blue splotch appeared in the lower corner and the more I used it the bigger the blotch was getting. Sony gave me a better 60" LED HDTV, but I had to fork over $700 for it. The HDTV was worth about $2200 at the time and my broken HDTV has cost me about $1400. Now you can get these HDTV for about $800-$1000.

My question to the people complaining about 1080i is what kind of TV do you have? If you have an old CRT HDTV, then you have something to complain about. It probably has a 1080i native resolution.

If you have an LCD or DLP, then you're probably being silly. If your HDTV only accepts 720p/1080i, then there is a good chance your HDTV's native resolution is 720p. If you input a 1080i signal to it, it just converts it to 720p before displaying. I had a Sony rear projection from 2005-2008. It was 720p native, but could accept and convert 1080i.

Now, around 2005, there were HDTVs with 1080p screens that could not actually accept a 1080p signal. This was during a short period of time. So, there probably aren't too many people with one of those. I remember a Sony LCoS screen that was like this.

Now im confused, I have a new 50 inch sony LED, and my xbox one is at 1080i (I checked my configs), so should I change it to 720p or leave it lol?
