So my disc drive doesn't read discs anymore, it doesn't even sound like the motor starts up. Before I tried cleaning the lens and the mirror and that seemed to fix it for about a month, then I tried it again and now it's completely fried.

I was looking into buying a replacement drive, but I would have to flash the firmware from the old one to the new one which I have no idea how to do. Can anyone confirm if it will work or not if I buy a used Xbox (that has Red Ring) off of eBay and take out the disc drive and put it in my xbox? I don't know if Red Ring affects the actual drive which is why I'm wondering if it might work.

I don't think it would work and I think paying the $100 for repair would be easier anyway but you can get a whole new xbox for $150 and get a new warranty anyway now. I have had all my refurbs from MS die early so paying the repair fee seems like a bad idea.

It would be easier for you to open your xbox, find out which model your DVD drive is and then order the EXACT same one. After that you simply replace the chip from the old DVD drive to the new one and no need for any flashing.

Until you get the new DVD drive you can always try this fix, it's not permanent but it may last a while. Search google for " Xbox 360 Pot Calibration" Basically it tells you how to increase the lasers power. Good luck and well I wouldn't pay $100 to fix it. If you are good with computers you can do this and save a lot. A new DVD drive will cost you 20-30 bucks and this laser power fix is free.

Oh but of course you'd be voiding your warranty if you opened your xbox.
