If I leave my xbox one s on to download a game for a few hours will it damage or permanently shorten the lifespan of the console?

If that were the case we would not be able to binge hours of gaming with no problem to the hardware. Yes its fine but if you're concerned you could put it on standby mode and turn the system off to let it download. It will proceed with the download in a low power state

You do know that you can turn background download on right? you can turn your Xbox off and it will still download the game, just don't unplug it from the wall and you're good.

Just make sure your console is set to "instant on" in the settings, it should be thought as that's the default setting.

Go into your settings and select 'Power and Shutdown'. Then change the option from 'Power Saving' to 'Instant On'. Make sure the option is selected for downloading while turned off.

I leave my Xbox One X on throughout the day while I'm at work (12 hour shift) passively gaining stock for my businesses in GTA Online. Still working like a champ from the release day.

You can download games and updates when turned off in the settings.
