The single player is almost fully dependent on knowing what happens during the first two games. The story is sequential from one to the next.

It is worth it, the first two are great games and all the campaigns are plenty of fun.

Yeah, this. There's really no reason to skip the first two.

If you haven't played the gears 1 and 2 campaigns then you really are missing an excellent series. My advice would be to pick them up, and the best thing is that you'd be able to get hold of both of them quite cheap.

To know the whole story I recommend you to see some movies on the internet or you could buy them cheap to complete the storyline. That's the only thing I want to say.

You will enjoy the story more if you play the first 2 but it doesnt really matter. Its not a really hard to understand plot and is alot of fun.

What's with you and not wanting to play the first two installments of a series? jk :P

I'd say no. Even though I liked the first two very much, thery are both very flat in the storytelling department. GOW3 was a big improvement in that area.

no but the games are cheap now and the SP campaigns from the first 2 are still good and fun to play co op. If you want to hop to the 3rd by all means good ahead.

You really need to play GOW 3 to understand GOW1 and GOW2 to understand GOW3

Yes and no is IMO the correct answer. If you don't care about the story you can easily pick up and play Gears 3 with no problems, though if you really want to know the story, you need to not only play the games, but to understand who a lot of the new characters are and what exactly is going on in Gears 3 you need to read the books, because Gears 3 was written by the same Author who wrote the books and is told in such a way that just assumes you have read them, and tells you nothing about whats been going on in the two years, and nothing about the new (to the games) characters, except that one of them would happily swap one of his squad mates for bacon.

I wouldn't say the first 2 are of great writing, but there is a good deal of story from the first two that is connected to what happens in the third game.

Eh, the Gears series is like 3 beers, it doesn't really matter in which order you drink them, it's always beer.

You have to play the first 2 games before playing Gears of War 3, not only for understanding of the story, but to feel involved with the characters which is necessary for the emotional and exciting moments.

You don't need to but there are some parts of the story you may be missing. I would play it.

I never played much of first two and I was kind of lost with some plots and characters but I still enjoyed it to the end.

epic changed writers for the 3rd game. Karen traviss wrote the gears books so for the third game the sotry is more connected with the recent books such as coalitions end. people who have read all the books and played the games can notice the difference in the 3rd game. what i recommend is to watch the cutscenes on youtube for the first 2 games, read the synopsis / plot from gearspedia for coalitions end then play the 3rd.

If you're into storylines, characters, plots etc. then i'd say yes, but if your main interest is action, firepower, then i'd say no. Although i have'nt played GOW 3 yet, i'd recommend you try the first 2 games ( i prefer GOW 2 ), apart from being really cheap right now, it'd be a good introduction to the series.
