Are these games both open-world multiplayer? Or is it just your standard racing for multiplayer? If they are both open-world, which would you recommend and why? Thanks. :)

But is multiplayer completely open-world, like a friend and I could just drive around the city together without doing races?

I would go with Burnout Paradise which I consider the best racing game of this generation. It has the best sense of speed in any game I have ever played and the game reaches new levels of controlled chaos. It is open world in single and multiplayer settings. In multiplayer there is free roam where you attempt to do a multitude of simple challenges based on the number of people playing with you and a free roam in which you actually have race events.

I know nothing about NFS.

Both games have their advantages and disadvantages. For instance, NFS:MW feels like Burnout Paradise and the older NFS's mixed together. This is perhaps because Criterion games made Burnout and took over this installment of NFS. Now, if you're looking for a less-realistic, more insane racing game, Burnout: Paradise is definitely the answer, but if you're looking for a more classic style racing game, then NFS is the answer. It comes down to personal preference, really.
