more than any other system, the 360 should be the console to allow games rated AOplayable. come on microsoft, there is a definite fanbase of ADULTS that want to play ADULT ONLY games. most of us watch porn on our 360's anyway......

I couldn't care less. After Gears of War got rated M, I'm pretty sure no voilence I want to play is going to get rated AO anyway. So I couldn't care less. And porn-videogames? That's just sad.

^No one ever said porn-video games, just they watch porn "videos" on thier 360. I think people want AO for violent games, like GTA. With the bad image Rockstar has right now, any violent game of thiers could get rated AO. It would be nice if 360 was the only one capable of getting an AO rated version while the PS3 is stuck with an "edited" version. Well GTA is just an example. But, it is true that the 360 should be the console to allow AO out of the 3, as it is most similar to a PC.

man, i knew most of you would answer this post like morons and that i shouldn't have put in the "porn" bit. i'm just trying to illustrate a point, that adults, who were gamers since the atari 2600 days are out there and would most definitely like to play whatever they want. given that the ps3 and wii are both in the market for the masses, microsoft should go back to it's hardcore fanbase and be a more adult gaming console.

if nintendos trick is a controller and a reasonable price, and sonys trick is blind mass appeal, microsofts should be the only system with b*lls enough to target a mature audience.

I agree they should allow such games & I don't really understand why they won't. They are in this business to make money, there is without a doubt a large base of adult gamers, so why not release a couple of games targeted to them.

Games like Dead Rising and Hitman have a Mature rating and they're hyper-violent as it is. So how freakin' awesome is Manhunt 2 if it got an AO? Sounds like it lived up to expectations as a sequel! But I agree, it's too bad we'll never see it on the 360 because of some imagined market stigma and a bunch of parents who can't watch what their kids consume.

I believe that ever since the Hot Coffee incident, the ESRB has decided that they must become more stricter in their ratings. Over time, what was once objectionable, becomes the norm. The Hot Coffee incident is not a very good example, as to say that part of the coding was never meant for the general population, it seems to me that Rockstar was having a little fun with the game while in development, but didn't think to take it out in the final print, given that there are *****shock***** _hackers_ in this world! What I am trying to say is that people slowly push the envelope a bit at a time, so that what was once objectionable becomes everyday. I remember not too long ago, people got arrested for wearing thongs, now it everywhere from panties to whats worn on the beach, for good and bad reasons.

Interesting that Sony and Nintendo don'tallow Adults only games, maybe that applies only in the U.S. In The UK many games are rated 18 which effectively makes them adults only. However the the bbfc has more teeth than your U.S ESRB that has practically no legal powers!

Retailers can be prosecuted under UK law if they are found to be selling to minors with upto a £5,000 fine or five year prison sentance.

Nintendo and Sony are only in it for the masses? And Microsoft isn't? Gimme a break, they are in it to sell as many consoles and games to as many people as they can. They also want to sell more consoles and games than their competitors.

Selling AO games means no major channels of distribution; so getting those games released and consumed will be more difficult. Couple that with the fact that IF Microsoft was to be the only company/system to house AO games, that would undoubtedly tarnish their public appeal.

Also, the post about "Microsoft should be the only console out of the 3 to release AO games because it is the most like a PC" doesn't make any sense. Microsoft does not control what goes on a PC, they don't have absolute power over it like they do with the 360. Just because their internal workings are somewhat similar should have no bearing on whether they should get AO games.

No game with violence gets rated AO. Except Manhunt 2. And that wasn't the kind of violence I was referring to. That would only leave porn in videogames to get them AO rated. So I said: no need for games like that.

I don't see how any of the console companies can get away with not allowing AO games. I mean, Nintendo claims the Wii is "for everyone." And both Microsoft and Sony's main target is the adult, hardcore gamer--didn't used to be that way for Sony, but with a $600 game console I think it's pretty safe to say most of the kids and casuals are going to be getting Wiis for Christmas instead.

So yeah, I agree the 360 should be allowed to play AO games, but I think that's true of all three consoles. Especially with parental controls and whatnot. I mean, it'll play porn DVDs just fine...

yes everyone wants to sell as many consoles and games as possible. but you have to admit that certain consoles have their own tried and true formulas. lets be honest, in a year, sony's latest abortion, the ps3, will undoubtedly be vying for top place against nintendo's child-friendly wii. all the young 'ins and casual gamers will buy the wii, and all the blind followers of anything sony will obviously be all about their beloved machine. microsoft, needs to push forward and realize that they can do something that no one else is doing. cornering the market on adult games would be perfect. sure, some craphole places wouldn't sell certain games in their "oh so clean and conservative" establishments (wallmart), but many other places would! you mean to tell me that IF the next gta were to be rated AO, and the 360 was the only console to be able to play it in its full and unedited version, as the artists who made the game intended, it wouldn't sell consoles??? you give ME a break! check the sales man- unedited versions of movies sell WAAAAAAAAY better than the neutered ones. with video games, it would be no different.

the xbox was born in mind for the hardcore gamer. the 360 came out and microsoft did something different. they pushed and pushed their console in japan to absolutely NO AVAIL. the Japanese just don't want a 360! then their promotions in the states became this all inclusive "one box for everything" machine "that the whole family can enjoy." unfortunately that "entire family" is buying the wii. microsoft needs to think ahead.

you mentioned how having AO rated games would "tarnish public appeal." dude, here's a wake up call for you: VIDEO GAMES WILL ALWAYS HAVE A BAD RAP!!!! parents, lawyers, priests, governors, teachers and rabbis will always try and blame something or someone else other than themselves for when little billy goes to school with a gun and blows away the bully for constantly pestering him. rather than take responisbility for the unsupervised child or the fact that they never listened to what he was saying or noticed any of his emotional problems, they point their fingers at video games, music and movies... no one wants to take any accountability, it's just easier that way...

...but i digress, all i'm trying to say is that there definitely IS a market for mature gamers. from thrill-kill (which was unfortunately banned), to postal II, from manhunt 2 to whatever next game breaks new ground, adult gamers are here, and microsoft should be the company to go to bat for us!

Once a game gets an AO rating for whatever reason on consoles, it will be banned until the developers tone it down to a M. Anyone remember the Manhunt 2 scenario?

I live in England. Here, we have loads of games on 360 and other consoles that have a rating of over 18's only. That is essentially an AO rating, since in the States, AO means over 18s. I don't think the issue lies in the rating. I think the problem lies in the attitude toward sex in the US. AO mostly applies to games with sexual content. It's rare for a game to be AO for excessive violence.

It is completely unnecessary for a game to be rated over M. If you want that kinda of content there are other forms of media for it.

Manhunt 2 was banned until it was watered down, and anyone remember the hot coffee thing in San Andreas? The game was pulled from the shelves until Rockstar could remove the code. AO rated games are not going to be made in the masses simply because retail stores will not sell them. For a company to try and pull an AO rating it would impact their sales tremendously. There's no reason to do it in a business sense. Don't blame the developers, blame society for being touchy. And besides, there are plenty of M rated games that get away with a lot.

There shouldn't be a AO rating if no one can make a AO game anyway.
