I played ME1 around the time it came out and actually don't remember much of the story. Should I replay it before starting ME2, or does ME2 do a good enough job of explaining the story in the first game?

I believe there is a recap at the beginning of ME2.

Play ME1, there is little things that make more sense in ME2. There is more to the story then what the recap says.

IIRC, ME2 has a story summary from ME1 so you know exactly what you did.

Just read the plot on Wikipedia. Like the others have said, there is a short recap at the start of ME2. As I played everything started to come back to me and you certainly do not need to remember every detail to enjoy ME2.

Play mass effect 1 again. much better and the story will flow more smoothly if you remember the stuff you did in the first game.

as long as you have a character to carry over, it should matter too much

I did same not to long ago and went ahead and replayed ME... glad i did. though you get a summary its the little things from going directly from ME to ME2 that made it that much better. I say do it if you have the time

Well if you want to remember all the tiny details, you either should replay it or comb through the Wiki, that recap is worthless.

What you said. It is a much deeper game with an imported character,

Just remember to keep your save file from ME1 handy so you can import your character(s).

I played it again so I could both remember what happened and set up the story as I pleased.
