help with xbox live.

I just bought an xbox on ebay, but i havnt got it yet, but I have some questions to ask.

Is downloading stuff like halo maps free?

If they are, can you download them without paying for the gold membership?

If you need a silver subscription, can you still get a silver subscription?

or do you just need to have it connected to the internet?

I might have some more questions later.
