First off: You NEED friends or family members to play with/against you! Computercontrolled opponents might be efficient but it is NEVER as fun to play a fighting game against an AI than it is against a real person.
Â
That said, I would recommend two games:
1. Dead or Alive Ultimate. It has awesome graphics and online capabilities, and of course, how could one forget thatÂ
when talking about Dead or Alive, great looking, oversized, wobbling secondary sexual characteristics on the female cast...
Other than that the game was a great dissapointment to me, because I expected it to be a good, skill-based, complex fighting game, but what I got was a mindless buttonmasher which doesn't require skill what-so-ever. The countersystem is way too complicated to be used for more than casual lucky hits and the only "skill" that isÂ
involved is to mash in combos, which are basically button-mashing to connect attacks.
It can either be described as a complete button-masher or as a super complex game where a buttonmasher stands great chances against a pro... Either way, I don't lke it,
but I know of a lot of people that do and it is considered to be one of the best fighting games ever.
Â
2. Soul Calibur 2: I really like this one. It is very easy to play. Give the game about 30 minutes and you should get theÂ
hang of it. The thing is, the combos are rather easy to execute and to remember and even without combos you can fight
pretty toughly. It is more about what I like to call "natural skill" than about "game skill". Whereas in some fighting game, someone who knows the game can beat any newbie because he knows the combos and the newbie doesn't, in Soul Calibur 2 the newbie can somewhat make up for it with superior "natural skill" (read: reflexes etc.). Because of that it is often called a buttonmasher, but not because it is one (not any more than any other ifghting game out there) but because you can be a seasoned player but still get beaten by a newcomer if he is a better gamer (just with less experience in the game).
Real button-mashers can be beaten with minimal effort if you aren't one yourself. ;)
The game looks great too and in my opinion its gameplay rocks. There is a very long singleplayer campaign that consists
of fights with altered rules (e.g. fight a few enemies in a row, or defeat an invincible opponent by throwing him out of the ring etc) and it is both fun to play and excellent preparation for multiplayer battles, which is where the game really shines of course.
Â
Both games are rather harmless in terms of gore. There is no blood or dismemberment in either although some attacks canÂ
look quite gruesome in both games. Nothing too bad though and if it were up to me both games would be rated PG-13 (12+).
The only reason why DoA:U could have possibly got its M rating is that in the intro a rape scene is hinted (it is just a few second long scene where a supposedly naked woman turns her head away from a mean looking guy who is in the same room - nothing is shown so don't worry). So if you are a kid yourself, or your brother/sister/son/daughter/nephew/niece/whoever-you-want-to-play-the-game-with is a kid you can safely get either of those games.
Â
