It's something that way to many gamers, and gaming journalists(Gamespot included) ignore way to often. Freeware and shareware PC games are taking up alot of steam.

Right now we have hundreds of complex deep 3D games to choose from. We have had threads about this in the past, but I think it is time that we get another, definitive thread that we can update, with links and discussions about the greatest free PC games out there.

So what' is your favorite free PC game? Or mod for a PC game you like?

Gunz: The Duel:

Type: Online Action RPG

Developer: Maiet Entertainment

Online: Yes(Only)

Size: 200 MB

Technical Intensity: Low End(pretty much everyone's computerscan play it)

Download Link: gunz.ijji.com

________________________________________________

I am going to start out wiith a game that I love very much. Gunz The Duel is a game about the cool action movies with running on walls. We are talking Max Payne, Devil May Cry and the Matrix ****of inspiration. The objective of the game is simple. Create your character, with the very few hair****and faces to choose from(something that unfortunately is very ordinary in most Asian Online games) and then go into battles with other people and wack it out.

Every time you kill an enemy you get experience. When you have gotten enough experience you gain a new level and thus also becomes stronger. After each round you earn money. Does money can be used in the shop to buy new weapons and clothing. Everything from Latex Suits to Grenade Launchers and silly hats can be purchased. The game also features a premium cash shop where people can buy uniqe items for real money. This is how Maiet is able to keep their servers up and running for free.

The game is fast and frantic, but not Unreal-ish fast. It's not particularly solid, and the animations are not very impressive. But strangely this has become one of Gunz biggest strengths. Due to the way the controls work with the game, many hardcore gamers have mastered the art of manipulating the controls for more "1337" effect. The most popular of these is called K**** K ****which originates from Korea, is a way of playing and controlling your character very fast and effective. There are also other "****", all which has been created by the community. For example part of using this ****would be to jump on wall, switch weapon in mid air, switch again, roll back, shoot, all to give more air time or faster speed.

Gunz is not a technical achievement. At least not visually or audio wise. It's biggest strength lies in it's gameplay. Very satisfying casual 3 Person online action. Using swords, dual wielding sub machine guns and running on walls is all quite ordinary in Gunz the Duel. The game is full of cleaver little touches, like, if your falling from a high ledge, you are able to stick your sword into the wall to not fall to your death.

Gunz is a great game. While not technically anything special, the most insane thing is that there is nothing like it out now in the retail marked, which makes Gunz an uniqekind of a game, that thanks to its low system requirements, can be enjoyed by anyone(almost).

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory:

Type: Online First Person Shooter - Team based.

Developer: Splash Damage

Online: Yes

Size: 260 MB

Technical Intensity: Low. Runs on the Quake 3 engine. Most computers should be able to run it.

Homepage: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/wolfensteinet/

Download Link: http://www.fileplanet.com/124800/120000/fileinfo/Return-to-Castle-Wolfenstein:-Enemy-Territory-Client-v2.55

________________________________________________

Enemy Territory was originally an expansion pack for ID's much anticipated Return to Castle Wolfenstein that went head to head with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault in 2001. Two legendary shooters that are alot of the cause for the big WW2 games we have today. RtCW: ET was later scrapped. Problems with the AI, made Splash Damagfe, ID and Activition decide to release it as a free stand alone game. A good idea since RtCW was so well recieved.

The action is fast and frantic, but the gameplay objectives are very team cordinated and requires the corporation of many people.

F.E.A.R Combat:

Type: Online First Person Shooter

Developer: Monolith

Online: Yes

Size: 1,8 Gigabyte

Technical Intensity: Medium-High. A decent computer will be able to pull through, but you will need a powerful PC to get everything out of this game.

Homepage: http://www.joinfear.com/us/

Download Link: http://www.fileplanet.com/166516/160000/fileinfo/FEAR-Combat-[FREE-Multiplayer]

________________________________________________

FEAR Combat, is the complete multiplayer component from Monoliths award winning F.E.A.R(2005)! The game is incredible beautiful. If you have a powerful machine you need to download this game for its beautiful graphics alone. when you shoot into the walls, hugh chunks of concret, wood, wall, blocks and other things go out. you really feel like your destroying everything. Mulitplayer is very traditional with deathmatch and team deathmatch and a few other modes. But its so solid that it hurts. It's worth it.

Warrock:

Type: Online First Person Shooter

Developer: K2

Online: Yes

Size: 600 MB

Technical Intensity: Medium

Homepage: http://www.warrock.net/

Download Link: http://www.fileplanet.com/160742/160000/fileinfo/Warrock-[Free-Game]

________________________________________________

Many People see Warrock as "Battlefield 2 Light". To me it seems like a very fair comparrison. If your looking for BF2 like qualities, then try this game.

________________________________________________

2Moons:

Type: Extreme Action MMO

Developer: Acclaim

Online: Yes(Only)

Size: N/A

Technical Intensity: N/A

Homepage: http://2moons.acclaim.com/

Dwnload Link: N/A

________________________________________________

2Moons is based on the Korean game Dekaron. Remade for the english audience, David Perry and Acclaim hopes to make 2Moons differ enough from Dekaron to make it truly westernised. 2Moons will feature an adult 18+ Rating. A major part of it's selling point will be the excessive amount of gore and blood, that will make other violent MMOs look like a "joke". The game is said to be incredible arcadey and fast paced.

The game will be free to play, but use OPTIONAL advertisment. Meaning that if you let the game use advertisment while your playing you will get 20% more XP for example, but you are still able to disable it, if you really don't want it.

The game will go open beta, July 20th.

Planetside: Reserves:

Type: MMOFPS

Developer: SOE

Online: Yes(Only)

Size: 2 GB

Technical Intensity: medium

Homepage: http://planetside.station.sony.com/reserves/

Dwnload Link: http://www.fileplanet.com/161867/160000/fileinfo/Planetside-Reserves-Full-Client-[Free-12-month-trial]

________________________________________________

I bought Planetside when it originally came out. It still stands as one of my biggest gaming moments of all time. The game feels alot like Halo and Battlefield. You got tanks, jeeps, snipers, hackers and so on. 3 Factions fight for supremacy by taking control of buildings. I remember being in a single area, where we where around 500-1000 players!!! 1000 PLAYERS! That was the most beautiful and epic thing I have ever seen in my entire life. That truly was something special.

64 and 128 games used to be something special, but a real FPS of that calibur was something... it still is insane.

This is Planetside Reserves. A free version of Planetside where you can get to rank 6, and play for free for a year. I haven't played it in years so I don't really know how it's doing quality or popularity wise.

Maple Story:

Type: 2D Anime MMORPG

Developer: Vizet

Online: Yes(Only)

Size: 600 MB

Technical Intensity: very low

Homepage: http://www.maplestory.com/

Dwnload Link: http://www.maplestory.com/

________________________________________________

Maple Story, in total, across all it's versions(Japanese, Korean, Global...) has over 50 MILLION PLAYERS. Eat your heart out World of Warcraft!;) Maple Story is a 2D Anime MMORPG. And a cute one at that. Highly addictive, and time consuming but rewarding, it is a game that with its cute charm has gained an incredible following. A Nintendo DS version is also planned.

Mabinogi:

Type:MMOPRG

Developer: Devcat Studio(part of Nexon)

Online: Yes(only)

Size: N/A

Technical Intensity: N/A

Homepage:

Dwnload Link: N/A

________________________________________________

I have not tried Mabinogi yet, but I have heard much about it. Everyone is wating for it to come out in english. It has been out in Korea since 04, and Japan since 05. The game has a system that allows players to play for free, two hours a day. If players wanna play more each day, they will have to pay. Interesting paymodel.

Though there are many other interesting things about Mabinogi. For example the games visual side. Also, the game features a real life aging system. Your character will eventually get older as time goes by. Your character will age with one year, every week. Though it is possible to rebirth your characters in a new recarnation.

The game also has guilds, player housing(and the abillity to pay rent), pet system and PvP. The game has a ton of life skills(Asia term for trade skills/professions). For example; Fishing, weaving, cooking, handicraft, first aid, tailoring, smithering, campfire, herbalism, refinery, potion maker, composing, playing instruments and more.

You cant loot good items, instead the game has a focus of players building all the usefull items in the world. As this take away, the fights and ninja looters, fighting over rare treasure. This also forces the anti-social players to interacte and trade with the crafters if they want good items.

Mabinogi seems incredible interesting and different. I personally desire this game very much. As do my pants.

Free Allegiance. http://www.freeallegiance.org/Suggested by KorJax.

Its a space sim mixed with an RTS. Very cool, although it has a large learning curve, and needs time to get used to it. Its one of the best games in general ive played, very good features, and the most teamwork ive EVER seen in a game. Very, very awsome.

________________________________________________

Vega Strike. http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/Added by KorJax.

A free-lancertype space sim that is VERY high quality. A major patch will supposiodly be released this summer, replacing the years old version that needs alot of work. The game also has several high quality mods like a Privateer remake.

The Babylon Project: http://babylon.hard-light.ne/Added by KorJax

What could be better? Modular downloadable camaign missions, all based on the Freespace 2 (GS's Greatest Games of All Time) Source Code Project, with great visuals, full voicing, and great epic space shooting gameplay?

This might sound a bit silly, but I think the best freeware game I've ever played was Hamsterball. It was so fun and innovative and had a lot of content. It kept me way more than any other free game I've played.

Americas Army was great. Its very realistic and it makes you think about strategy and work as a team. I had a blast with Wolf: ET as well but it got boring very quickly.

The greatest game ever happens to be freeware, so I'm posting it here. Yeah, I know, it's not even 3D, and the graphics are so 1992, but who cares? It has the gameplay, the music, and the humor in spades!

A game that looks really cool, which is soon going Free Play, is Cabal Online. I have never tried it, but I can't wait until they release itfor free later this month!

Love the way the combat system looks. Might be my most anticipated game in all of June:) And then 2Moons open Beta in July:-D

I think enemy territory is the winner because it's just download, patch, and play. With Gunz if the server is full you can't play last time I checked which was 2 years ago.

Gunz has gotten a new host(Ijji) and they have done a great job to fix the server ques, agent errors, hacking, lag and many of the other problems that was annoying for players. Give it a try:=)

are you joking? how can any of thouse games be better than americas army?

...especially runescape

nahhh jk i really like runescape, its a lot of fun but in terms of graphics and things like that it doesnt even compare to americas army... none of thouse games do, americas army should have 100% votes on that poll, in terms of graphics and sound and that sort of thing but in terms of fun i think maybe runescape or gunz should win, though AAO is a lot of fun too =D

sorry for my bad grammer but its like 5:30am and i havnt gotten any sleep yet.... aight g'night

When Americas Army is done on the Unreal 3 engine i`ll say its the best ;)

In the time being - Echoes.

Awesome pick and play Asteriods style game, with a modern retro look like Geometry Wars.

Cell Factor is half decent aswell.

Hell I could name loads of MODs though ;)

AH is legendary because it is one of the few games that managed to do the jump into the retail marked on both GC and PS2. If I recall they did very good, and I know that people love the improved HD version on Xbox Live.

Have you seen their new game? Castle Crashers? Unfortunately XBL exclusive but it looks effing insane:O

It wont take long if you download it from fileplanet. Sure there are queues, but the servers are very fast.

Runescape isn't as bad as everybody says. It is great for younger players looking for MMORPGs. It starts them off with something easy.

nations is a really kewl game. the offline tracks are a bit boring imho but the community (trackmanias strongest asset) have made some really really excellent courses. seriously.....FzeroGX and wipeout could learn alot from these guys. i stopped playing though because.....well....because i got TM: United on steam :D. excellent, brilliant game. its nations.....on steroids.....and speed....with booze :P.

theres another mmo flying game that has come out but i cant for the life of me remember what its called. inspired by starwing (kinda). ace pilot or something. i havent played it yet but i hear good things.

Did somebody say PlanetSide? Regarding that game, I tried it before the Reserves program, and subscribed since I had a good time with a small outfit. So, why don't I play it anymore? For a game dating back to 2002 or so, it's horrifically unoptimized. If you're like me and all you have is 512 MB of DDR-266, you're in for so much hitching that chances are the first time you encounter an enemy, your PC will seize up, and the next frame you'll see will be your character's lifeless body, unable to have reacted to the threat due to the temporary freeze. I might return once I make my major upgrade, though...or I could wind up playing WWII Online instead. ...Oh, wait, this is a FREE PC games thread. Why are we talking about MMOFPSs that require recurring subscriptions?

I think the deal with enjoying Maple Story, is that it helps to find some nice people to play with. I have found a quite significant amount of people to be rude and lame.
