M1 Garand was never scoped. By the Vietnam War, the M1 had been replaced with the infamous M16, much to the disgust of the elite riflemen who had been given the gun to test in the marshes of Florida. They found it constantly jammed, could not take humidity, was overly difficult to strip-down in the field, and seized up in rainfall. Their recommendation was to ditch the M16, but too much money was invested in it.
My choice for WWII would have to be the Russian Tokarev SVT-40 (scoped). It was a gas-powered self loading rifle, and was a major upgrade of the standard issue Mosin-Nagant. Major Konings (you might remember from "Enemy At The Gates") considered it to be superior to the standard German bolt-action Kar. The Germans in fact tried to copy it, which produced the Gewehr 43.
