I'm not too familiar with Japanese culture, so maybe someone can explain it to be. With titles like Okami and animes like Wolf's Rain(and of course, the always upcoming Twilight Princess), what is the fascination with wolves? I mean, I love wolves but is their some cultural reference or this just a trend?

I don't know much about japanese wolf culture, but supposedly TP is loosely based on a story about two lovers, one can transform into a wolf, the other can turn into a hawk of somekind.

Well there was a tale of a werewolf that saved a dynasty. Even though he was outcasted because he was a wolf he managed to save the land but died in the process and his son gained his werewolf powers ..........wierd huh?

But that probrably has nothing to do with everything@

"In many ancient myths, the wolf was portrayed as brave, honorable, and intelligent. The best examples of these myths can be seen in those of the Native Americans. The wolf was also the revered totem animal of Ancient Rome (see Romulus and Remus and Lupercalia). The gray wolf is also the focal point of Pan-Turkism and related mythology. In Proto-Indo-European society, the wolf was probably associated with the warrior class, and the term was subject to taboo deformation, the Latin lupus being an example of a mutated form of the original Proto-Indo-European*wlkwos. Many Germanic personal names used to and still include "wolf" as an element (e.g. Wulfstan, Wolfgang, Wolfhard)."

I pulled this from an article about the wolves and how they reguarded in folklore.  Brave, honorable, intelligent, and a warrior are all things that describe Link so it fits well.

You do realise that due to the rich amount of history in the world, many animals can carry that trait in one culture or another?

Wolves - They're cool because they're sort of like rangers. Lone agents of nature. They are dangerous, yet rational. They're smart too, and they're kinda cute :)
