It was the one that got me heavily into the series, (my first one was actually Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, but it wasn't very good). LttP contained so much to do, so many secrets, and random NPCs were all unique. OoT is the only game to rival it's mastery in my gaming world.
That's difficult as I'm on the fence between the two mentioned here.... ALTTP vs. OOT. 2D Top-down wise, absolutely ALTTP, and 3D wise OOT. They are quite different games overall, the whole feel is Zelda but it is tuff to compare them directly. I've played LTTP multiple times but not OOT (likely more of a time factor overall!), although I've played the original zelda likely the most.    -----okay okay, I'm stalling-----probably have to go with ALTTP
It is really hard not to say Ocarina of Time, but it has to be Ocarina because of the vast world you play through and the sweet graphics on the N64. This game blew so many people away that it not only is listed as the best Zelda game of all time by the majority of critics, but it is listed as one of the best games overall period.
I will say that there is not one Zelda game that disappoints me, even Zelda II. Though I have yet to play Four Swords.
Ocarina of Time always wins these sort of topics, eh? I'm not sure really, although I'm stuck between Ocarina of Tima and the original Zelda. The original Zelda started it all, and proved to be a great game with the difficulty of it and the puzzles, making it a very very challenging game thart was worth every second of playing it. Ocarina of Time had such a a great story, along with the great graphics, mechanics, sound, but didnt't prove much of a challenge to me.
I think the The Four Swords Adventures is the best. The gameplay is so flawless, and the graphics are breathtaking. Naw, I'm just joking. :P Wind Waker is my favorite.
Like I have mentioned many times before, each game is truly great in their own respects... but when all is said and done I would have to say OoT with ALttP being in an extremely close second.

Although Link to the Past is still my favourite, 4 Swords Adventures is really fun as well. Of course you have to have 4 friends with GBA's and 4 link cables, but we did it! and throughout 3 gatherings, we beat 4 Swords Adventures.
