So this has been another year dominated by shooters?
ikhzo
Not really, it's been an exceptional year for RPGs.

Who here played Amageddon? :PÂ
Just saw Gamespot's editor choice awards revealing Skyrim to take most of the glory - best X360 game, best game all year and best RPG game,
Don't get me wrong, Skyrim looks great (and I am probably biased in this opinion), but playing Dark Souls for an hour or so did just suck me in, and very few RPG games do that, Dark Souls in my opinion is a lost gem this year, I feel Skyrim will just take all the glory, and games like Dark Souls, Uncharted 3 (BOOM!), Portal 2 and others will be left out...
Nice lil rant there...
Woah there, Portal 2 wasn't left out at all. :P In fact, it was all over the place. Both in nominations and in dominating multiple categories. Maybe not as many as Skyrim, but it was still quite a bit.RoseFlambe169
True dat, Portal 2 picked up best PS3 game which was good! But still 2011 has been a great year for gaming, I just hope when the reader's choice awards come out towards the end of the month, Skyrim won't be all over it like with the editors choice awards... Still can't believe Uncharted 3 wasn't even up for nominations for best PS3 game of the year!

Uncharted 3 was kind of a let down :P. Nad Portal 2 was not left out... It got best PS3 game.
Also Skyrim is just astonishingly good!

I'll pretend I didn't just read that...

As much as UC makes me j:zz in my pants, I must agree. UC3 was a great game, but it just didn't wow me with every second like UC2 did. They focused too much on the MP portion of the game and I feel the SP suffered. However I still believe it is one of, if not the best game this year.Â
OK in all fairness I will accept that it Uncharted 3 was a lot more like Uncharted 2 so if anything it was still a phenomonal game! :P
But my frustration (if we get back on the topic here) was that Gamespot didn't even list this game in the PS3 game of the year category which is baffling! I mean with the Xbox 360 game of the year you had Gears of War 3 which was the ONLY Xbox360 exclusive game on the list, and on PS3, you had all the games on there that could of been played on both Egg Box and PS3..
I'm pretty sure I ranted about this in a previous post, but I like ranting.. Merry Christmas everyone!
Gears of War 2 wasnt on the 360 list when it came out, either.nintendo_warrio
Ive ut so many hours into that one :P compared t others at least
Gears of War 2 wasnt on the 360 list when it came out, either.nintendo_warrio
We've been over that, BECAUSE THERE WERE SO MANY BETTER GAMES.

Like which?
[QUOTE="bugbag"]Dead Space 2 seemed ignored in the awards.:(stephenage
For good reason, that game sucks.
Steve beat me to that.Â
Dead Space 2 definitely deserved recognition. Gamespot gave it a 9.0, which is the same as Skyrim. I think they simply forgot about it.
@Doc I agree, Human Revolution was one of this year's best and it felt ignored. They seemed to enjoy Portal 2 though.:P
bugbag
It got exactly the recognition it deserved, the recognition that a large number of objectively better games came out this year.
Also the game didn't get a 9, every release bar the PS3 version got an 8.5. Those were reviewing the actual game, the PS3 version was a review of the game and the bonus addition of Extraction, that got a 9. Therefore Dead Space 2 as a game got an 8.5. Not a 9. And never equate a game like Dead Space 2 to Skyrim...
It's just disrespectful.

I can compare games if I want to, I'm Bugbag!:P
Seriously though, the gameplay is fun and challenging, the story is decent and doesn't feel forced and the technology is very atmospheric to a disturbing level. It's a well done game worthy of it's phrase, and is one of the top five greatest horror games ever made.
It doesn't necessarily feel special is my main problem. Not enough originality brought it to a lower level, but it still remains as a incredible experience that should be be missed if you are into the survival horror genre. Best horror game since Silent Hill 2.:P
I was shocked it wasn't nominated for the Best Atmosphere category, even though I voted for Human Revolution.
The game is not disturbing at all, it has very uninventive enemy design (which is also very repetitive). THe story is really not good at all, I mean it has the EXACT SAME TWIST as the previous game. Also I like how one of your favourite horror games isn't scary AT ALL.
It's a repetitive grind for most of it, interspliced with decent set pieces. Though these are pretty jarring and feel like they are from a different, and better, game that doesn't abide to old gameplay conventions that make Dead Space such a chore.
And again, there were a bunch of games with better atmospheres released this year.
It wasn't really scary, no. But it was disturbing.
I've been in the Survival Horror genre since the first Resident Evil, and this is a personal choice. I loved Dead Space 2. If I had to pick the best horror game, it would be Silent Hill 2. But honesty, I still enjoyed Dead Space 2 more.
Another good one was Clock Tower, even though the ratings were low. It was a slightly poor game in terms of gameplay, and being scary but it has one of my favorite horror villains in video game history.
And Dead Space 2 was very atmospheric. I only picked Human Revolution because the atmosphere was the best thing about it.
It's not distrubing. It thinks it is but it comes off really poorly for trying so hard and failing. We put an extra limb on this alien, creeped out yet? This alien is a baby zombie thing, disturbing huh?
No.Â
The atmosphere in Dead Space 2 is just stolen from Bioshock and handled poorly.
