No, not really. Sure there are some games that are more suitable for the casuals but besides that, I don't really see it much.

They should have a range of difficulties. Starting from so easy that if you die your family should disown you, going all they way up to impossible even if you hack.

Making a specifically hardcore game probably wouldn't be the best idea for sales, but they should definately put in a hardcore difficulty in some games.

How about games that appeal to both? Yeah I know it's impossible to do so but one can dream, can't they?

no that's not my point, games are dumbed down and make gameplay, story and singleplayer irrelevant, and focus more on multiplayer. I am not talking about the difficulty, but the games themselves

Now that you mention it, quite a lot of games seems to have multiplayer, most recently known would be Tomb Raider. It's almost like there's an unwritten rule that says games must have a multiplayer mode.

that' what i mean, developers seem to make multiplayer a part of the game to please the causal audience and the hardcore audience want a singleplayer that is good rather than half good and most of the resources being used on a generic multiplayer.

I don't blame them, they are most likely worried that no multiplayer= less sales, which I find is a rather silly mindset.

it is a silly mindset, but they take resources away from what should be the main part of the game, that's what makes making most of recent games so casual

Which is why we need a new Starwars Battlefront. :P

They had great story and great multiplayer. There was that issue with hacking online though.

I haven't played the multiplayer on the PS2 or Xbox back when it was possible, but on the PSP it is impossible to get a game without hackers.

That was one report. Then there was also another saying that it was barely even started on PS3, didn't work at all on xbox, and had more bugs than GS.

Do you guys think games are becoming to casual?

The_Last_Ride

Yes. Not too many games are much of a challenge in terms of gameplay. There are usually a kind of fake hard. For example max payne 3 was pretty easy in terms of gameplay even at hardest but the distance between checkpoints added a fake layer of difficulty and made it tedious. How many games these days are hard because of smart AI ?

I think my biggest issue with the gaming industry today may be the fact that developers are trying to turn games into movies. I miss the days where a game didn't have to make sense, as long as it had a fun and creative idea. I think that's what we need more of: Creativity.

I know back in the PS2 era new games were coming along all the time. The only thing last year I played that wasn't a sequel was Dishonored... Oh, and also Journey.

Hopefully with the success of Dishonored we will see a rebirth of new games. I still want sequels like another Deus Ex and Metal Gear Solid, but we need more games that give you freedom and don't try to be movies: Instead tries to be a old-school type game with modern generation technology. Dark Souls pulled this off nearly flawlessly.

I also miss the days when you reach a cutscene and you get really excited. Nowadays, games have too many cutscenes that don't share any relevance or any story progression. Metal Gear Solid had a ton of cutscenes interruptions, but I recall them all progressing the story and it kept me excited. I don't think we need videos to show a explosion or stuff like that.

And that brings me to quick-time events... I don't want to mash square in order to walk. We don't need any of that.

I'll stop my rant now.:P

In halo 4 there was an animation for every button that you press... and there were a lot of buttons. They also threw in random QTE's that felt less than welcomed on the series.

RE6 loves QTEs too.:P It's like you get assaulted by them. I think the game industry is moving forward and backwards. Controls, graphics and stories have all improved, but some of these new additions are just bizarre.

I agree with the movies part. I have nothing against linear games but with linear games of the past you could still explore the level as you played. These days you are on a strict path that sometimes can't be deviated from or the game kills you like Battlefield 3. I miss games like No One Lives Forever which were fun to explore and felt free for a linear game.

As much as I love Uncharted, that's probably the leader in cinematic games. They take the controls from you quite a bit.

Hopefully games won't become like those on-rails shooters. Dead Space Extraction had a great plot to it, but you have to deal with severe motion sickness.:P

In the original Halo I heard its possible to launch a warthog over certain level boundries and let you explore parts of the level that are otherwise unreachable. I was never able to do it  though, but it sounds cool.

Kman5507

You can skip half of level 5 and 4 using vehicle tricks, and you can drive the warthog in buildings you're only supposed to enter on foot, but I never discovered any areas like that.

@Koolkat I got really dizzy because the game plays itself. The only time I've ever gotten motion sickness was with BioShock, but the way the character moved his head in Extraction was enough to near about make me sick.

Try it.

I saw someone get through level 2 so much quicker by just killing the marines you're supposed to protect, so you can just leave rather than fight the covenant there :P

Also when Cortana explains to you why you can't fire Halo, I want you to pay special attention to why. Remember that when you play Halo 3. Everyone else seems to forget it.

Also there is something someone you meet in halo 2 says in halo 3 (not a spoiler. just something he said) that I want to ask you about. It is very important.

I liked halo better when it was skill. Halo 4 feels more like its always first shot wins. They tried to make it too codlike. I might even buy blops II since they changed halo so much.
