OK, so in some of my other Unions, we play a game called "This or That".  As the first person, I'll post two related, yet different things.  The next person has to choose one of the options I put forth and post their own set of two related, yet different things.  I'll start.

Yeah, that's totally it. And I pick Lament. Feels more like Castlevania to have a Belmont in charge instead of as a supporting character.

Aria of Sorrow. Better art style and those seals in Dawn were just plain annoying.

Aria. I didn't want to give up my hard earned souls for better weapons in Dawn. In fact, I finished Dawn entirely with an measly Axe.

Symphony for the PSX.  The Saturn version, while it had extras, was rushed and buggy, not to mention in Japanese.

Dimitri is pretty much way more kickass than Soma because he wtftricked Celia and became an abberation of demonic funness.

2D Castlevanias, but that's a close call.  They've both had incredible and horrible games.

I feel SotN has the best music in the series to date.

The Soul System.

I still liked the cards, it's just that some of them were a complete pain to collect (not exactly saying the souls aren't!)

What a great one...  I don't know if I would have much use for the Ebony Stone and an area enveloped in endless night.  However, that would be insanely cool.  It might work better for me if I were already a vampire.  I would pick the Crimson Stone, unless I have to be somewhat powerful to use it.  I might become a vampire anyway just to reap all the powerful benefits of the Crimson Stone.

Skillful Alucard from Symphony of the Night

Although I've never played Dawn of Sorrow, I have played through Dracula's Curse and the limited Alucard in that is not nearly as fun as the skillful Alucard from SotN.

Dracula from Castlevania or Castlevania III? Also I would like someone else's opinion on the previous question since I have not played DoS.

Dracula from the original Castlevania. I prefer the teleport & 3 fireball attack as it makes him seem more familar to the rest of the series.

I thought the Magic books were interesting, but I really enjoyed the orbs from Lament.  I loved so many of the attack combinations you could come up with.  Some of my favorite combonations could be made with the Holy Water and various orbs.  I also enjoyed how the orbs changed Pumpkin's sub-weapon.

Red crystals (CV64, CV: LoD) to power sub-weapons or the classic Hearts to power them instead?

Hearts, but I'm a more of an old-school guy to begin with. A key example would be my opinion that Castlevania should be about the Belmonts and no one else (though Belnades as supporting/secondary characters is good too). BTW, Castlevania Bloodlines had crystals too.

Yes, Bloodlines did have crystals.  In the game they were red, but appeared blue in the HUD and Password screens.  Something I've always found interesting is how they were one of the items that form passwords on Bloodlines and white jewels are the means of saving on the N64 Castlevanias.

This is a hard one to pick for me.  Upgrades for whips are nice, but I like it even better when the upgrades aren't temporary.  As long as you don't die, in games like Bloodlines or Legacy of Darkness, you don't have to worry about loosing the power-ups--but that can be easier said than done.  I like the upgrades you can choose to equip like in Harmony of Dissonance, where different stones can be fitted for different things.  Or Lament of Innocence's different whips.  I guess you could also say the cards in Circle of the Moon are also in this category.  I guess you could say I'm more of a fan of items you can equip, even if they are weapons other than whips.

Death's Scythe as synthesized by Soma (DoS) or forged by Hector (CoD)?

Not a single post on this poor board in two days...

**Steps in as Maverick RockmanSRD, infected with the Sigma Virus**

I prefer the one Hector creates.  It's just so awesome.  I could sit there and watch it for hours.  Using it is cool, too.  The only thing I hate about it is trying to get Death's Pulse so I can make the blasted thing.

Castlevanias set in the past. The future setting of Aria/Dawn seems more of a gimick, considering you spend all your time in a castle. There's nothing to really show that you're in the future. Thus keep it in the past where it belongs. My appologies for no posts. I'm normally only on Gamespot when I'm at work, M-F 7-3. That excludes weekends. IGA's revision of the series timeline: good or bad? (I'd say good, but his comments on Sonia Belmont were horrible)

His Wikipedia entry gives a little info on it. The part I'm clamoring about most is the rumor that Castlevania Legends was removed because "a woman cannot be a main Castlevania hero(ine)."

Nope, the alterations to the timeline are true. I only said that the part about Castlevania Legends was a rumor because I couldn't find proof. Anyhow, now that you've answered the question, please post a new one. I wanna keep playing!!

LOL sorry to confuse people, I knew the time-line was officially changed, I was talking about the Legends comment, but anyway I don't think they should have messed with the time-line, but I guess they had their reasons.

Sorry wasn't prepared for this so...

Castlevania SotN, playing as Alucard or Richter?

Personally I think playing as Richter added a little more challenge to the game (if you didn't use the dagger item crash thing)

A difficult choice.  Hector is the star, but Trevor is Curse's resident Belmont. In the end, I pick Hector.

The motorcycle skeletons were nice, but I actually enjoyed getting chased by the Franken-gardener.  It would have felt strange playing as the character that started out as Cohler/Corler/Coller... probably one of the farthest things from the Castlevania "formula".

Would you prefer a Castlevania game to give you consequences for taking too long to reach the Castle Keep or spending too much in the shop, like in CV64 and Legacy of Darkness...  Or would you rather be able to take as long and spend as much as you like, free of any changes in the game?

Very tough choice there, considering the play style of both. Simon's Quest is one of the best Castlevania games ever, the open ended exploration is great. When I received Dracula's Curse for Christmas though I could not put it down. I actually stopped opening presents because I wanted to play it that badly. If I had to choose I'd say Dracula's Curse. That game kept me hooked for so long, and was so challenging. It took me months to finally beat it (mind you I was like 6 or 7 at the time) and it was the greatest gaming moment in my life at that point.

I don't have a this or that right now, mainly wanted to bump this topic back up, so someone else give there thoughts on this choice please

Well, to give my two cents, I say Dracula's Curse. I much prefer the traditional Castlevania style of play. If it wasn't for Simon's Quest, we wouldn't have such great one-liners as "What a horrible night to have a curse." Version of Simon's original story: Castlevania (NES) or Super Castlevania 4?

I'm pretty torn up on this one.  Castlevania on the NES was my first exposure to the series, which is pretty huge.  Super Castlevania 4 was one of the first games I saw on SNES that wowed me because of the graphics.  There was depth to the backgrounds, everything just looked great.  Also, I remember I could occupy myself for 10 minutes at a time by spinning the whip.  I just never seemed to get over how awesome it was that they let you whip in any direction you wanted to.

Depends. If it's the Medusa boss like we got in Symphony that actually is a Medusa, then I pick the boss. But if it's the giant Medusa head boss ala Lament, then I pick the flying heads.

Death. Even though the Castlevania story is about the Belmont Clan vs. Dracula, he isn't in every Castlevania game. Death is, and is so high and mighty even when his battle is a joke.

I'm restating my prior question since the previous poster didn't answer it.
