When you meet someone really intelligent, and then find out that they don't believe in evolution?

I met this girl in my Sociology class, and we had to do a 10 minute presentation on a social problem, and her social problem was Atheism in America.

I was :| throughout it.

It does make me question most everything else they believe.  But not always, our neighbors for nearly 10 years are great people, but they could give a flip less.  Some people just aren't into learning about science or politics or things I'm into.  So if they just genuinely don't have an interest that's one thing, but if they do and still don't believe in evolution well that's disappointing.

Sorry if that was a rambling mess.

Yea. It would have bugged me too. But the person you are describing firstly, doesn't believe in evolution and secondly, she is making atheism an issue by refering it as a problem in society. That's a combo! But it's OK, I guess in classroom but if she starts to bring this topic up outside of the classroom she will piss some people off.

One of my best friends is like that but I'm certainly not disappointed in him. He keeps his beliefs to himself and hes an awesome dude so it doesn't really matter.

Oh, I put that wrongly, sorry. I know you don't hate them :P

What meant is, I won't feel annoyed, hateful, or etc that they don't beleive in evolution.

I would have found that a bit strange to sit through, but you can't hate someone for it. But yeah, I can understand you being disappointed by something like that.

I don't know anyone intelligent who doesn't believe in evolution. I've actually only known one person who actively disbelieves in it, and he had a mental problem.Funky_Llama

My girlfriend doesn't believe in evolution (And no, she isn't a hardcore fundamentialist Christian; more like a quasi-Buddhist feminist) and to be fully honest, she is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met.

Hah; yeah, she's on a spiritual search right now, and religion is one of the things we talk about all the time; she is a woman of pure contradiction, but I think that's why I like her.

That, or the fact that people tell us we would fit in at Woodstock '69.

No.  But she blamed Atheists for higher crime rate, spread of STDs, and higher divorce rate.

I couldn't believe she would do that presentation.. since for a while I thought she was an Atheist

By what you say I can't claim she is not intelligent but she definetely (conciously or unconciously) chose to be blind to some point in assuming such stereotypical... facts(?). Besides I don't suppose she made a good point as to why what she said was true or even plausible.

They don't believe it because what they currently believe contradicts it.

They don't believe it because what they currently believe contradicts it.

There really is nothing to believe -- there evidence is there, and they don't accept it, it is as simple as that.

To say they don't believe in it, is to suggest that you have to put faith into it.

Atheism in America? That sounds quite strange, as though it's only a social problem in America. She may have a point, since atheists tend to be socially introverted more than theists in a God-driven society.

I've never met someone extremely intelligent that doesn't believe in evolution. There are some good people who are knowledgeable about certain things, but biology is generally not their field of interest.
