No, not anytime soon.  Right now being religious has become to big a part of the American Political System.  I'm sure we've had some, but out in the open, not anytime soon.

I'm sure it's possible. I'm wondering if an atheist will come before or after a woman, or perhaps a homosexual.

The question is rather, ''Do you think there will be a modern atheist president, who wishes to publicly reveal his or her lack of belief?''

Yes. I personally think Obama is in the closet in terms of religion.

Another question (and sorry if i get off topic-if so i'll shut up): Will there ever be a president for the usa who will not be hailed as the savior of america or the world itself as if he was meant to rid the usa of evil or whatever. People should remember that politicians are simple people who willingly take up a task, not people who are more important just because their job is more difficult. The same respect you should show to the garbage-lifter the same respect obama and everyone else deserves. I hate it when I see americans (especialy black americans and famous people) who act as if salvation comes with obama. I'm not against him or any other president but don't you think people overreact and act dramatic? Again if I'm off-topic, i promise to shut up.

I was going to type out this long response, but I was so tongue tied (mentally) that I decided that was the only thing I could type.

I was going to say that any atheist running for President simply shouldn't make their atheism public. Unlike Barack Obama for instance, where promoting his diversity is somehow viewed as a good attribute.

Definitely. Just wait 'till he does something to piss them off; then they'll be changing their tune. ;)

Back on topic though, I think some day we may have one. But not real soon, because as btaylor mentioned above, it's unfortunately become a big part of the political system.

Would an Atheist president have to have a pastor give a prayer? Or is that optional?

H_F I believe that is optional.  But it's never really come up so who knows.  Once the religious right gets out of politics, they see what it got them the last 8 years, let that happen again and they'll move on to a 3rd party, anything is possible.  As much as I wanted it, I wouldn't have bet a cent on Obama being elected 18 months ago.

Do you think that Obama is secretly an Atheist?  I was told that he dabbled in Atheism when he was young.  And if it is true... I have a hard time believe you can go from Atheism to sitting in a church every Sunday for 20 years believing everything that guys is speaking.

It's entirely possible. He may have gone back to church life because his wife was Christian, or he may just be smarter than he looks, and joined the church to become more connected to the community and gain their trust while he molded his image in the Chicago political scene. There are a multitude of possible reasons.

I cannot pretend to know what's in one man I don't know's mind.  But, in my experience the more curious one is about everything, which he seems to be, the greater the chance they lean or look into Athesim.
