Hey SW, just wondering what your favorite rpg's are NOT including FF series.
Mine would be:
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Dragon Quest V
3. SMT: Devil Survivor 2
4. Persona 5
5. Etrian Odyssey 2

@xantufrog
Shining Force 2 especially is great and could easily have gone on my top 5. In fact I argue that SF2 is one of the best games, period, of all time.
Demon's Souls
Digital Devil Saga
Digital Devil Saga II
Shenmue
Grandia II
Is Shenmue a JRPG though? And Demon's souls isn't the traditional JRPG either.
Yu Sazuki the creator called it the first FREE RPG. I consider it an rpg, if it isn't then neither is The Witcher 3.
Also Demon's Souls is most certainly a Jrpg just action based instead of turn based (Shenmue isn't turned based either BTW)
it's artistic tone and atmosphere comes from and was inspired by classic Japanese manga/anime series Berserk
Tell me where exactly have you seen the demon types like the ones shown in Demons Souls in other Western based RPGs before Demon's Souls release?
Answer...YOU HAVEN'T! Because it's based on Japanese lore and style period.
Any more questions?

Check my avatar, I'm familiar with Berserk. ;)
Well some would argue JRPG is more about style than region. But okay.
Btw, I love Demon's Souls. One of the best boss battles ever is the old monk imo.

Then you should know better, shame on you for questioning the matter.
Also, Demon's Souls STYLE is 100% Japanese or didn't my Berserk reference not make that fact painfully clear?
Only western alternatives were shitty Oblivion, fallout and Dragon Age which are all NOTHING like the "style" Demon's Souls presented 2009, so again...shame on you for questioning the matter.
This is a really hard question. Open like this, it would mainly be NIS SRPGs like the Disgaea series or Makai Kingdom. But if you exclude NIS / SRPGs I had no idea what to answer. There are so many great JRPGs.
My top 5 JRPG's that are not Final Fantasy are *drum roll*
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA - PS Vita version
Persona 4 Golden - PS Vita
Freedom Wars - PS Vita
Phantasy Star Universe - Xbox 360
Lost Odyssey - Xbox 360
Others Mentions
I could seriously make a list of all Phantasy Star games... what the heck, in order:
___
Other JRPGs: Shining in the Darkness, Shining Force 2, Dark Souls 3, Fire Emblem, Pandora's Tower, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, FF12 TZA, Valk Chronicles
I suck at having played enough JRPGs.
1. Paper Mario: TTYD (masterpiece)
2. Tales of Symphonia (awesome)
3. Xenoblade Chronicles (didn't like it much)
4. Chrono Trigger (didn't like that game much either)
5. Final Fantasy 4 (it sucked)
Might have forgot something.. Anyways, I guess JRPGs isn't really my thing. They often have way too much filler and bullshit to sit through. But I think Dragon Quest XI looks pretty sweet. Might actually get that game.
I see people listing games like Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem etc. If we can do that, my list would look completely different, but I don't think that's what you meant by "JRPG"..
There's JRPGs that aren't Final Fantasy, weird?
Super easy for me as I feel that Final Fantasy as a series is HIGHLY overrated.
1. Xenogears (PS1)
2. Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millennium (Sega Genesis)
3. 7th Saga (SNES)
4. Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
5. Project Octopath Traveler (Switch)
Honorable Mention to:
-Skies of Arcadia (Sega Dreamcast)
-Lunar II: Eternal Blue (Sega CD)
-Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom (Sega Genesis)
-Shining Force 2 (Sega Genesis)
I’ve loved the JRPG genre for my whole life but there’s still so many I need to catch up on. (Being that I haven’t played Chrono Trigger yet.)
For me they require a lot of time. That’s why I’m kind of picky with what ones I play. There’s a lot of them though. But when you truly think about it I’ve only played a handful which amazes me over the years. Lol
1. Popolocrois
2. Tales of Graces F
3. Megman Battle Network games could be classed as JRPG’s?
4. Pokemon Crystal/Soul Silver
5. Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch (Wasn’t a huge fan of this game but will list it anyway.)
