Your 2014 GOTY Nominees(thus far)

We are well into the year, so I figured it would be interesting to see which games SW believes are in contention for GOTY so far. I'll begin.

Dark Souls 2

Divinity: Original Sin

Child of Light

Sadly, that's it so far. This year hasn't exactly been pouring with great games imo. I purposely left out TRDE and TLOU since they are re-releases. I figure it's doubtful for one of those games to receive the award. Also, to those of you that played the Destiny beta, do you believe it is GOTY material?

3. Wolfenstein: The New Order
4. Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Haven't played Dark Souls 2 yet, still need to get around to Xenonauts (I love me some XCom), still have to try Transistor, and above all else Bayonetta 2 and The Witness still have to come out.

Shovel Knight is next up on my list of games to play. I keep hearing great things about it. I hope it lives up to the hype.

Now to think about it we haven't had many good games this year. I'm cool with that though. I don't want a rushed game. And don't get me started on my backlog.

I've been wanting to play Shovel Knight, but at $15, I needed to wait for jg4xchamp's seel of approval.

I like Broken Sword, but got very confused over the plot midway through Broken Sword 2. Is Broken Sword 5 worth playing if you have not played any of 3 or 4 ?

Only game worthy of being GOTY material so far.

I think Mario Kart 8 is the only 2014 game I've played.

You like second son?

I started the game a few days ago man and it's so fucking boring when you start it. Cinematic walking, some dumb shit about Troy Baker's character, binary moral choice again for the umpteenth time, a bunch of straight forward, corridor shooter combat encounters but this time his energy source is even more specific than infamous 1 and 2 so the opening encounters are even more of a typical regen health shooter.

Ground Zeroes might be a fucking appetizer but that game is like freedom the video game, infamous second son is like bitch please, this is 12 Years A Slave.

It pains me to say this but child of light and transistor while being fun games (especially the latter) I can't say that either are GOTY meterial. Transistor has the best gameplay mechanics of maybe anything I've played this year, but it does nothing to truly immerse you otherwise. It's the same battle over and over and over.

Child of light was a disappointment for me in a sense. It was VERY streamlined which aided it and detracted from it, but the kicker was that for such a beautifully inspired art direction and fun rpg light gameplay it was wholely forgettable.

I have yet to play Shovel Knight, but I have a feeling when I do I'm going to be in video game heaven.

Honestly though, as of today there isn't a game I've played in 2014 that is a goty.... I hold high hopes for the rest of the releases.

The rest of the year doesn't look too promising either. I'm expecting an obscure GOTY for this year. Truly, Divinity is the only game that is worthy, but like @Cloud_imperium said, games like that don't win GOTY on mainstream media.

Mario Kart 8 has been a ton of fun but not Game of the Year material in my eyes. I really need to finish Ground Zeroes, just got suddenly busy and couldn't finish the short thing. Probably will restart it when I do. South Park was fun but not Game of the Year...

I finally started playing Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn this year when it launched on PS4. Although I haven't played it as much as I want to, I'd honestly call that my Game of the Year so far. It's incredibly immersive, beautiful, and fun. Can't say that I've enjoyed playing a game that much in a while and I'm not sure why. I know it's far from anybody else's pick, but right now I'd put it as mine.

@jg4xchamp: Infamous has its moments throughout, but yeah in the end I was kinda left with the "that's it?" Feeling... and nobody better give that "well the game was meant to played through twice" shit... because that is not a merit for excusing a short and rather simple open world game.

Hearthstone and Banished are both worthy of consideration. Bayonetta 2 looks like it is going to be the best game of 2014, but Civilization: Beyond Earth also has a lot of potential.

It's good. Nothing more. Literally only made the list because I wanted three games and Danganronpa is horseshit.

The cat and mouse gameplay is so fun but THEY REFUSE TO FUCKING CHANGE THINGS UP. Like, at least change up the bad guys' suits' colors, damn. Put Second Son's combat in a more competent developer's hand and magic happens. Pretty as all hell though.

Have you played previous Infamous games?

That's always been my sentiment on the games. The actual mechanics are fun, but the encounter designs? several layers of horse shit.

Dark Souls 2 gets honorable mention but Divinity gets the top slot by a long gap.

Divinity Original Sin hands down. Dark Souls 2 modded on PC is great too. Wolfenstein The New Order gets the bronze medal ATM.

Played a few minutes of the second and it was better.

Seriously, aside from one or two examples of sidequests that could have been streamlined, Shovel Knight is smooth as butter. Play dat shit, guys.

@intotheminx: I've not played it and have no real strong of it either way. It looks fun albeit maybe not my favorite genre in gaming, but that doesn't sway me from wanting to play it. I noticed it's a popular choice in this thread.

The Wolf Among Us is definitely up there. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it.

Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition

Since next gen is so shitty it's the perfect time to play games you missed out in previous gens.

So Fallout New Vegas, Vanquish and Pyschonauts would be my GOTY nominees this year

Nothing at all. Only game I really played was Divinity Original Sin, which took WAY too long to complete.

The only GOTY quality game I've played from this year so far is Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze and I'm pretty sure it will snatch the title from me in the end. Very rarely is there a game made with this much care and talent.

Watchdogs

A lot of Divinity on here. I'm wondering is it hard to get into? Like does it take hours to get a good grasp on the basics of the game? Kind of on the fence with it despite the excellent reviews.

@intotheminx: The Wolf Among Us is a damn good game, but technically it was released in 2013 with the first episode while the remaining episodes were released in 2014.

It's between Divinity and Dark Souls 2. On both games I spent over 100hours each. But as Dark Souls 2 has worn off its novelty, Divinity must take the crown this year. There was nothing really good to play this year except those already mentioned choices.

Fallout New Vegas is so good, it can be GOTY any year it wants.
