You can only play one genre for the rest of your life. What do you choose?

Someone got a gat to your noggin', and they'll pull the trigger unless you choose one genre of video games and stick with it solely for the rest of your miserable life. Uplifting, isn't it.

I'd choose RPGs, western or eastern, don't matter.

What about you, my dudes?

Real time strategy my dude, I can never get enough of games set in history that require a great deal of thinking and planning ahead.

Strategy. Real-time, turn-based, 4X, doesn't matter. It will never get old with me.

Action-Adventure is my go-pick. If that doesn't count, FPS genre then.

I'll do you better and go with one game

But RPGs is a good pick. Or you could pick a creation game like Dreams and it's like wishing for more wishes.

I put like 1000 hrs into BB. I'm done, but if I didn't have any other choice, I suppose I could try a naked, weaponless run.

@nod_calypse:

Open world games. I get that the industry is over saturated with them but I feel that they're the ultimate answer to creating the best video game to suit anyone's standards. They have huge worlds to explore, things to do and the adventure can be tackled at your own pace. There are a lot of bad ones too but the better half like Rockstar games are where the genre really shines.

Building games, like city-builders, factory-builders, base-builders.

I don't know if things like Cities: Skylines or Dungeon Keeper or Factorio count as part of the strategy genre, but if they do they I'd say "strategy"

Second choice would probably be MMO. I enjoy them for the most part, but that's more of a pragmatic decision simply because MMO's are well-supported and could actually last you the rest of your life. Plus you can push the definition to include other games like Diablo, Destiny, etc.

They really have.

I don't know what to call certain games sometimes, if you had to pick one genre.

Though it feels like this has been going on for a while. Was Deus Ex a first-person RPG? An action game with RPG elements? An RPG with action elements? Does "immersive sim" have enough examples to warrant its own genre label?

This seems to be a common theme. Anything basically with an element of creativity involved, as in the user-generated creativity. Makes sense. Unending scenarios.

Eh, action games I guess? Is Nioh primarily an RPG or an action game? I know there are no-brainers like Ninja Gaiden or DMC but some are more ambiguous and contain elements from multiple genres. Is open-world a genre? I guess not but it's hard to define what a genre is.

Probably souls games.... They are hyper focused on gameplay and they deliver on setting, deep lore and fantastic moments. They are also have deep systems and inspire replayability. Really in modern gaming there's nothing more exciting than the next souls game. Elden ring took it even further.

I mean, all games have some sort of action if you stretch the definition. But as for an actual, bonified action genre game, the definition gets narrower.

Considering I was playing them when I was a kid, and still play them today, yeah, I could go with that.

I‘d miss rpgs, sports and action games but I easily pick strategy games.

My family would feel so sorry for me they would probably pick up a Sega Saturn for me and I could play my copy of PTO II.

Hearts of Iron III, Hearts of Iron IV, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nobunaga‘s Ambition series among others would keep me busy.

Would have to be a spur of the moment choice between fighting, racing, or puzzle games.

Easy choice, Strategy.

So much diversity, and the games have had a long history of remaining games.
