Xbox's Next Gen Plans Leaked--"Cloud Hybrid" Console Planned For 2028

In a major leak, Microsoft's plans for the next generation of Xbox consoles have been revealed, including a heavy focus on "cloud hybrid" technology, machine learning, and AI.

A number of sensitive documents detailing Xbox's upcoming plans have been leaked due to the FTC v. Microsoft court case, including a number of slides detailing plans for Microsoft's next generation of consoles. The future consoles have a focus on "cloud hybrid" technology, and seem poised to encourage a greater use of AI and machine learning in gaming tech.

The vision for the next generation, as laid out in the Xbox documentation, is to "develop a next generation hybrid game platform capable of leveraging the combined power of the client and cloud to deliver deeper immersion and entirely new classes of game experiences."

A table of key strategic decisions shows that Microsoft is considering switching to an ARM64 CPU, like the Nintendo Switch uses. Points listed under "graphics innovation" also show Microsoft is targeting DirectX raytracing for its next-gen consoles, as well as machine learning-powered graphical enhancement.

In general Microsoft seems to be putting a lot of focus on AI and machine learning for its next generation, touting its use for "optimization and acceleration of game performance, operations, and development for players and creators." In a table of features that could be "powered by AI & ML," Microsoft lists a number of areas from matchmaking and player discovery to AI game testing and optimizing monetization.

Also listed as a "key innovation" coming with the next generation of consoles is an "immersive game and app platform" that will allow anyone to develop their own games--likely similar to Roblox's development platform. This seems to play in to what Xbox executive Sarah Bond said recently about the potential for AI to further enable players also becoming game developers within the Xbox ecosystem.

The leaks also included details on Microsoft's mid-gen refresh due out next year, which will feature a discless version of the Xbox Series X with increased storage.

If I’m reading this correctly, this will be an all digital system that can’t play games on its own and will need the power of the cloud to run games? This sounds like a terrible idea. I’d be best if they just released a streaming box and call it a day.

Let me also say that if these plans come to fruition then I will of course eat crow because it’ll technically be a new console after the series consoles. But you gotta admit that it’s a weak sauce idea.

I think Microsoft is being highly optimistic with 2028 and it'll be a hybrid system.

I’m sad to say this, but the rise and fall of the Xbox is in the early days now.

2028 the anti-console will be is upon us and it’s up to Sony and Nintendo to save us from armageddon.

Fanboyism aside this is depressing. Although I prefer Playstation I've also bought an Xbox every generation. It looks like I will be moving away from them completely.

It says hybrid so it's not exclusively cloud. I'd imagine it would be some cloud integration into the console so that it plays better with Xcloud versus the web/server based solution that we have now.

I can't imagine a console being 100% cloud, it would be DOA

If Sony does the same thing MS is doing, PS5 will be my last Sony console

I remember when you Sony clowns said "It's impossible to stream games! Xbox is doomed". Yet hear I am, in 2023, streaming Xbox games to my Galaxy Z-Fold 5.

MS is a tech giant - leaps and bounds above Sony. Greatness is hear, but it also awaits.

A cloud hybrid console is honestly the future. The idea that the cloud will at most only be used to stream games is incredibly shortsighted.

And honestly, Microsoft isn't the only one thinking about this. Sony is spending billions on the "the cloud" as well. My money is they are absolutely looking at things beyond just streaming as well.

Getting out of the hardware business is absolutely the future. It’s expensive and slow attach rates restrict innovation. A cloud hybrid is smart, and Xbox needs to be the pioneer for the next industry shift instead of chasing it. I’m fine with the move

I prepared myself for the end of physical I always felt it would be digital 100% by next generation.

Everything in these leaks is terrible. Also, so much for BC. It was useful for PR I guess
