https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-heres-all-your-data-that-microsoft-may-share-/1100-6458946/

  • limited Microsoft account data such as country and age range;
  • Xbox profile data such as user id, gamertag, gamer profile, and avatars;
  • data about your game play or app session, including achievements unlocked, time spent in the game or app, presence, game statistics and rankings, and enforcement activity about you in the game or app;
  • social data, including club memberships; friends, other users you have played with, and information about your interactions and communications;
  • data about the game or app's performance on the console, including error reports;
  • content you create, upload or share in the game, app, or within Xbox Live;
  • other data, like gamerpics and real name, that you choose to share based on your settings or by providing additional consent.

Considering how connected the world is and how people post what they eat or shit out, this is nothing special.

I would take a wild guess and say...none. They get it for free.

Yeah I got a notification on my Xbox One about this a couple of days ago. It’s important to note that you can choose not to allow this data to be shared. Anyway this isn’t a big deal for, I really don’t mind if they share that information about me to publishers.

I am surprised that Microsoft is doing this for the Xbox at a time when Facebook is facing heat over this issue.

Haven't gotten it yet. Could it be US only?

@Ant_17: Part of me thinks its currently tied to the preview program. My Xbox has gone through 2 updates in the last week, with both start-ups giving me a notification to accept third party sharing. I'd expect to see one whenever your Xbox does a new system update.

They were going to get rekt by the GDPR, so they had to make a notice that they were mining personal data.

Oh, and the ps4 got a privacy settings update in mid April because of the GDPR. So, no, the two companies are not alike in this regard.

Basically everyone shares your data now. The entire world knows everything about you and its too late to change that.

Of course they are. What else are they gonna sell? Games?

Microsoft are the data mining kings. From Windows 10 constant telemetry, to the LinkedIn purchase. There's an arms race in Silicon Valley and beyond to collect as much info on you as they possibly can.

Unlike stupid MS, Sony shares all your data with hackers.

Also Sony shares data. Lets not be ignorant.

GDPR comes into effect on the 25th in Europe so you will be able to opt out of anything that shares your personal data.

Hence that Windows 10 update last night that makes you say if you want to share personal data.

Does it work for the US or is it a EU only thing?

@Pedro: I’m not sure to be honest. I know it will effect the US but whether it’s to the extent it is over here I don’t know. It’s a massive thing here and companies will be liable for enormous fines if the don’t adhere to it.

All digital platforms do it, whether its dating sites, social media, games, etc.

They ALL have privacy settings that you can opt in or out of.

All make you sign privacy agreements.

Why isolate one out of the bunch?

I got a similar update on PSN, Origin, Uplay, and Steam over the last month.

Our U.S Government has been doing that for decades. To them, there only looking for info that would be a threat to the U.S however. MS isn't the only one's who is sharing data, other media apps do it but doesn't even mention it to the users in most cases. But the good news is, we have option for privacy settings so there's that.

@boycie: @Pedro: A lot of companies are taking the step of making the change globally. In theory, an EU citizen who is overseas could make a GDPR inquiry and that introduces exposure for a lot of your bigger MNCs.
