Blu-Ray/DVD drive maybe? How else are you supposed to watch movies without eject and disc drive port?

They just took a regular One S and sealed up the front. LOL. Yeah, this wasn't a hastily made product at all.

Makes sense considering it is a mass production electronic device. Changing the internals to much would negate any cost savings . Third semester of business ftw

I'm still trying to figure out why they took the one advantage Xbox had over PlayStation (4k Blu-ray drive) out. Looks like they literally just took it out and added some plastic to the front cover. You can get a One S with 4k drive 1tb hdd(with Anthem) for $249.00 from Microsoft via Amazon right now, so I don't get the $249.99 price tag that's supposed to save the consumer money.

Saw a person who open the Sad, it has the plug for the disc drive inside it. It is just an S. You are buying an S with a part removed for more than a regular S. Wow.

I’m not at all surprised myself. It makes sense for Microsoft to do this from a production and business standpoint.

The most likely reason to go digital is so they can bypass paying royalties for Blu ray tech

The most likely reason to go digital is so they don't have to pay the Blu-ray association for every Blu-ray disc they make.

By making it digital they can finally bypass that.

What do they save by doing that? A few cents? Microsoft isn't pinching pennies that hard.

They could have saved even more money and just used quick dry white out to hide the disc slot

Honestly I'd rather $50 for the BR- Player . Not all movies I want to see are available to stream and downloading them eats HDD space.

Here's an idea for current Xbox One S owners:

  • A roll of white electrical tape - $1
  • Gas to store - $1

Take your Xbox One S and put some tape over the disc drive.

Profit - Save $248

The 4K bluray player was the only advantage the console had over the PS4 and MS wants to take it away while raising the price.

I predict this will bomb hard and stores will clearance it out before the holidays.

No reason to waste money on yet another redesign when the gen is almost over. I don't know what people were expecting.

It's probably because people think Microsoft is "killing off traditional generations" and that the One S will playa big part of their future strategy. I think that's all wrong.

Microsoft is most likely using the One SAD as a way to test the market for a potential discless version of their next generation console. If it were a more serious move then I would expect MS to more aggressively build new hardware. For instance, perhaps an additional die shrink, a smaller form factor etc that should have longer term price implications.

SAD is the perfect name for this console.
