You'll be able to play Xbox One games on the Oculus Rift, the companies said today. At an event in San Francisco, Xbox head Phil Spencer said you will be able to stream your Xbox One games to the Rift and play them using your Xbox One gamepad. (A gamepad will ship with the Rift.) No specific games were mentioned, and it wasn't yet clear how many games would be compatible with the Rift when it ships.

Oculus' first consumer model is expected to ship early next year. The company hasn't set a price yet, but the total cost to use the Rift is expected to be around $1,500 including the cost of the PC. By partnering with Oculus, Microsoft has essentially turned the Rift into its answer to Project Morpheus — Sony's forthcoming virtual-reality headset that will be compatible with the PlayStation 4 and Vita.

E3 has started, first shot fired

Smart move. Instead of wasting money and time on VR they'll just jump on Oculus.

I'm surprised Microsoft didn't attempt to have Oculus work on X1. Give it time I suppose.

Its not a stand alone platform, you need an XB1 to stream the game. So by the looks of it you'll need a nice PC, OR and a XB1 to play the game through it.

One has to wonder how well it will actually work. Also, I don't see the kind of person buy the Rift interested in Xbox One titles.

I guess Microsoft had to have some kind of answer to Morpheus. Still think no comment would have worked better. VR is still in its infancy.

Isn't the $1500 the price of both the OR and of a PC that's capable of using it? As in, it actually only costs $300-500 or so for the OR, then theoretically it'd work with the Xbox?

Is the Xbox One powerful enough to run OR well?

The helmet itself will probably be somewhere between $200-400, the 1500 comes from the price of the PC you need to use it added in.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. When people talk about VR on Morpheus it's "OMG, teh 720p cinematic VR experience." Now we're talking about VR on an even weaker system and calling it shots fired?

Weird to thro in something I'm sure lots of PC gamers allready have. Wonder how much is added to the total price? The Halfmoon controllers looked real neat though.

Is it already sure that the streaming is: Xbox One -> PC -> Oculus Rift?

And not just: Xbox One -> Oculus Rift? Or does the PC enhance the game in some way? Because that would be amazing, but I doubt that

And the streamed game will still be 30 FPS, I don't don't see how it's any better than Morpheus.

Spencer talks about streaming Xbox One games to Windows 10 devices – PCs and tablets. “That same streaming capability will be available for Oculus Rift. People will be able to stream their Xbox One games – great Xbox One games like Halo, Forza, Sunset Overdrive... to the Oculus.”

Sounds like it will just use it as a screen rather than head tracking and all that stuff. I think VR will be extremely limiting, and I don't think people quite realise the power required to run games on VR headsets like they are hoping.

Yeah I'm guessing they will use the oculus rift just as a screen, when it comes to the older games. And if they wanted to, they could create VR games, and use it with the Oculus, like Sony does with Morpheus.

They are wording it to be misleading. You don't stream directly to the rift from xbox. You still need a capable game pc. It works like this XBOX ->PC->Rift.

For those interested

http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/11/8766917/oculus-rift-xbox-one-controller

So you'll need a PC with windows 10, calm yourselves lems, it'll cost you the guts of almost 2 grand to use the OR with everything thrown in.

I don't think most people here really understand what the Rift is doing with Xbox One games. They will be playable in a "Virtual Cinema" using the rift. The games will not be 3D, use head tracking or any of that stuff. This is just a bonus feature for the rift featuring the Xbox One. Nothing more.

Smart move imo. Why spend the money designing your own when you can use an established one. Plus it's usable on PC as well as opposed to Sony's only working with PS4. I still don't see myself playing games that aren't in 1080p as is on a VR headset which will lower the resolution even more to make it run at decent frames.. What will the new resolution be on the games on VR, 480P? We going back to OG Xbox resolutions to make this happen? It is called the Xbox One so maybe we are. I just don't see why this is happening when these consoles just aren't powerful enough for VR to run properly.

This seems like the better option for them to take as opposed to designing their own though.

No, the shit costs $1500 as a stand a lone peripheral.

And no, there's no chance in hell of the XBone running OR by itself.

$1500 for OR + At least $1800-2000 for a PC setup powerful enough to fully utilize it + $350 for an XBone

The Oculus Rift is not going to cost $1500 on it's own. Where the hell did you get that from? Do you think all those developers are spending money on making games that will sell to a few hundred people?

You're right about the Xbox One never being powerful enough to run games direct to a Rift.
