https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/xbox-consoles-new-browser-can-also-stream-steam-games-including-death-stranding/amp/

People in the Alpha Skip ahead preview program can run some Steam games on the built in Edge browser.

As reported earlier this week, Xbox testers in the Alpha Skip-Ahead group can now access the updated Microsoft Edge web browser on Xbox One and Xbox Series S / X consoles.

Thanks to the improved compatibility support with Chromium, the browser will run web browser apps such as those for Google Stadia, Discord and more.

Crucially, GeForce Now’s compatibility means that Xbox players can stream many of their Steam games to their console, including PlayStation console exclusive Death Stranding, and ray-traced enabled versions of Cybperunk 2077, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and more.

Makes sense to me. Play where you want on the same platform.

So you still need a PC to actually run them...

Nothing's stopping MS from letting the Series to boot to Windows mode and be used as a regular PC though.

I do not use the GeForce Now service but I thought it was not using your own PC but it was using servers on the NVIDIA end to run the game.. correct me if I am wrong

I thought you could stream to consoles anyway? I know its super easy to stream your PC games to mobile with the Steam link app.

Imagine if Xbox struck a deal with Steam or Discord to run PC games on the Xbox console. The Xbox console would have DirectX and the other APIs and required applications that it shouldn't take much to make windows games compatible on the system.

Maybe Microsoft should create their own console UI for a version of Windows 10 that could run on a Series S/X and run PC games. It'd certainly add a hell of a lot more value to the hardware, and is 100% doable.

I've been wanting this for longer than I can remember. MS should do it on their own terms before the system is cracked open and we can just put Linux on it and run Steam that way.

@regnaston: You have to pay extra for that, and it's still streaming... You might be able to play Luna and Stadia games through this as well. That's fine for people who want that.

Running them on the local hardware is a more attractive option for some people.

Lol, I misread the the title and it got me excited for a sec. If the XBox actually supported native installs of Steam games and functioned like a little under-the-TV console I'd buy one. Ah well

That's funny, the Edge browser can barely run YouTube through the browser without struggling after YT's last big update, but it can run Steam games, yeah, funny.

@lamprey263: The Xbox Chromium-based version of Edge has recently started rolling out, and in a few weeks everyone will have it. Maybe it will work better with this update based on Google Chromium project instead of MS's own EdgeHTML.

@girlusocrazy: I use it on my PC and it works pretty good. I have been hoping since hearing about it they'd get a working browser for the XB1 and Series X, good to know that is finally coming.

@regnaston: Interesting, how does one get GeForce Now to work with an Xbox Controller? Is there a certain way to do it?

@Ice-Cube: I don't know about the Xbox browser but the PS browser enables the gamepad so you can play web games with a controller.

Haven't tried GeForce Now with it though since I don't subscribe.

Have not tried it (it is in a skip ahead build for insiders).

I think it lets you play an hour for free each day or something.

That would be awesome if they did that. Keep the disc drive and allow people to play that way, through game pass, or steam.

@girlusocrazy: Im not 100% but I think it does something like that if I remember right, it might be an hour per game. I tried it when it first came out but I am not a fan of the streaming thing. It at least has some sort of free trial. You still have to buy the games though or already own games on Steam (you can link Steam account to GFNow).

@vfighter: I have no issues with streaming games on fibre broadband. With a ping of 3-5ms, I don't notice any latency. They look fine too.
