The next xbox update will bring support for high refresh rate displays in 1080p and 1440p.

You can finally play your 30fps games at 120hz...?

But I guess it's neat they're giving support to different display types

120Hz Comes to Consoles

In April, we added variable refresh rate, 1440p resolution support, and auto low latency mode. But we aren’t done just yet. In May, we’re adding support for additional panel refresh rates. Gamers with gaming monitors and televisions that support a 120Hz refresh rate can now turn on 120Hz support for 1080p and 1440p output resolutions. This high refresh rate option means you can now take full advantage of displays with 120Hz capabilities.

I'm trying to think of what benefit this would actually provide with the game not hitting that refresh rate in frames. Eliminate ghosting, improve response time?

Yeah I didn't really think so, their heads are in the right place though with this stuff. This is the proper thinking and implementations going into next-gen, possibly even this one with certain titles that could exceed 60 FPS if coded to. A high refresh rate option + freesync and a game with the ability to hit above 60 FPS is pretty enticing.

If older games support higher frame rates it'll come in use.

Without some sort of hardware interpolation feature, im not sure how this would work.

To be fair, (if done well) interpolation can really give the appearance of higher frame rate but at the cost of higher latency......which is counter productive to the idea of higher refresh rates

Could they mean games would have unlocked frame rates?

The problem is they're simultaneously pushing 4K. Not even the GTX 1080Ti can consistently hit over 60 FPS at 4K, let alone the RX 580 in the X1X.

The RX 580 is a 60 FPS 1080p card, which again wouldn't take advantage of a higher refresh rate. You need to be hitting at least a consistent 80 FPS, but ideally 100+, to take advantage of a higher refresh rate.

I'm not talking about bleeding edge tech games, think of stuff like Below, Cuphead, Minecraft etc.

The shit box can't even do 60fps in a lot of games. High refresh rate support is good but silly for the level of hardware.

So, now XB1X will be able to run the base XB1 games that are locked at 30fps...at an "uncapped 30fps" refreshed in 120hz or am I reading that wrong?

Which the list is probably like... one game? if even? Lol It's just another feature they want to list that people won't understand but are impressed by tech jargon.

Sweet. So it renders every frame 4 times and can claim that it does 120hz. I see what they did there.

Same thing the PSVR does. Console manufacturers will never cease the smoke and mirror deception

X1X is higher than RX-580 e.g. Far Cry 5.
