I can’t imagine playing these types of games with a controller, I wonder what kind of compromises are involved with the “optimized” mechanics. Good on them for supporting keyboard and mouse though, more PC-to-Console ports should do that instead of just dumbing down the entire game.
Keyboard mouse is the way to go for RTS. I'm glad the Xbox port supports it. But controller can work. Not as efficient but it can work.
I was a big C&C3 fanboy. Played mainly on PC but bought both 3 and kane's wrath on 360 just so I could play it with friends who didn't have PC. Surprisingly, I got used to using a 360 controller on that game. I wasn't as fast as on KB/M. But it was functional and worked. I was surprised tbh.
I never played 3, how did it compare mechanics-wise to it‘s predecessors? I know some other RTS’s made for consoles (such as Halo Wars, as someone mentioned) were watered down compared to real ones so that it would work on a controller. I’m a big fan of isometric CRPG’s (not too dissimilar gameplaywise to RTS’s) and in the past few years several have been ported to console (and received controller support on PC) after the fact with no dumbing down. I’ve tried 4 of them with controllers (Deadfire, Divinity OS2, and the two Pathfinder games), and while technically functional, it took at least 4 times as long to do anything and with more pausing. That’s without even getting into inventory management.
All that to say, at least optional M&K support should be standard for all PC-to-Console ports instead of watering down the whole experience for everyone.
Mechanics wise it was identical. Same units, same structures, weapons, everything was the same for the most part.
PC did have more Map selections and Mod support tho. But yeah mechanics wise the games were identical.
The C&C3 console port did the the wheel system for unit selection. But you could also select units with A like you would clicking a mouse.
The biggest downside imo is the speed of looking around the map on an RTS. Being able to click on the mini map and immediately be at that part of the map was the biggest drawback for the console ports not having mouse. That's where the biggest drawback was. Games like Divinity and pathfinder is a whole other ball field tho. I figure it wouldnt be to bad with Gamepad since they are turn based (i get it would take longer)
Kind of similar to RTS. Speed seems to be biggest thing affected
