Well, Xbox One is surely a worthy opponent to the PS4, but it looks like the gaming community considers it only half as good. While Microsoft has conveniently decided not to share sales figures any more, some statistics revealed recently suggest that so far they have managed to sell 18 million Xbox Ones.

And yes, thankfully that figure is for consoles sold, and not shipped.

There is no doubt that Microsoft has had a very good holiday season with major game sales boosting their financials, but the lead between them and PS4 has finally touched the rumored 2:1.

Mary Jo Foley, a known Microsoft analyst has revealed that about 200 million Windows activations were made and that out of those, 18 million were for the Xbox One. While this is not official, it is reliable and probably the best we are going to get since Microsoft won’t talk.

Well, we reported on how the PS4 sales had touched 35 million in sales recently. So 18 million, 35 million… same launch dates, arguably the same resources, what does that tell you.

In all honesty, Microsoft is doing pretty well with the sales so far and saying that they have failed would be unfair. There are some really amazing titles that they have released (or plan to release) and truly, at a time when people were complaining about the lack of exclusives on PS4, Microsoft had more.

However, that is also the point of concern here, even with established console seller franchises like Halo – and all that Microsoft could think of doing – they have not been able to shrink the sales gap with PS4.

On a side note, it was speculated by Blake Jorgensen, the CFO of EA that both the consoles will cumulatively reach 51 million by the end of 2015 – it looks like he was right.

So do the consumers in general consider Xbox One half as good as PS4? At least in terms of sales, they do. Do you consider it half as good as Sony’s latest?

Thought this was interesting. Could this activation number be used to infer the sales number? Assuming that is the case, what say you System Warriors?

Also, please be aware the source may not be legit and it's numbers, until proven otherwise, shouldn't be taken as anything other than an educated estimate.

@Chutebox: Yup, that would probably include used. This is still not official numbers and they are likely still less than 18 million sold through to consumers.

I have no idea. I think not though.... wouldn't make much sense, would it? An used console would already be activated, but it would have a new account associated to it I think. Again, not really clear at all on how that process is supposed to work.

For all I know they may or they may not count. If someone can shed some light on this, much obliged!

PS4 will pretty much win Gen 8 unless VR is a massive flop

@Desmonic: Just to be clear, it's not activated, it's "active devices" which apparently means devices that have been active in the last 28 days. So I don't think it would be double counting used devices, and it wouldn't count any devices that hadn't been used (online?) in the last month--however many that may be

Wasn't Xbone selling 1:3 at launch? I would believe it if they bridged the gap a bit and went 1:2

Not surprised, but I still have mad respect for what Phil Spencer was able to accomplish with the console after Don Mattrick botched the launch.

I wonder how this would compare to actual number of PS4's in consumer use. We know that Sony have sold 35 million units to shops but how many have the shops sold on to customers? I don't doubt for a minute that the PS4 has sold more but I wonder if it's closer than it looks.

Wrong. Sony sold 35.9 million to consumers.

I think around 14 million, but I may be wrong about this.

@thecouchpotater: that would have been 17m in North America alone, then. Not a good figure to draw analysis from.

@Shewgenja: Looks like I was mistaken. Apparently MS announced sales of 10m 360s on May 14, 2008.

I would think that is realistic based on the last number of around 10 million before black Friday of 2014. If they are still beating records of previous years as they stated.

I don't mind people being optimistic and for all we know he could be right but making a flat out claim with no information from MS themselves is just silly.

Indeed. He does this in every MS sales thread though so I'm not surprised in the least. He and NyaDC are masters of pulling numbers from their ass without a shred of evidence to back them up.

18 million activation's, that is pertaining to Windows 10 activation's, any users who do not use online services would obviously not fall under this umbrella thus they would not be accounted for.

Now the real question, how many users use the console offline only? There's got to be some way to assess this from other data, possibly older data from the PS3 or 360 just to get a baseline percentage of the typical online to offline ratio.

It could be several million above this, armed forces, people who live in remote areas, people who can't afford internet etc...
