Poll Would you have bought PS4 Pro and/or Scorpio if available on Launch Day for more? (29 votes)

No, I would not pay more than $400 for a console and am okay double dipping mid-gen. 7%
Yes. If I had the option to buy the powerful version at the jump, I'd pay a higher launch price for that. 83%
I am planning to wait to buy the more powerful version next-gen. 0%
I don't buy launch consoles/wait for price drops/I`m okay with the base model console power. 10%

Ever since the PS4 Pro came out, I've been curious as to what it would have taken to make a Pro or Scorpio available at the start of the generation. It's obvious that both consoles were products of technological advances as well as manufacturing advances to put a price/power package together at something resembling the accepted mass market console price point.

That all being said, the CPU power has remained constant. Due to the relatively commonplace components at the heart of these consoles, there was no sheer technological reason that the more powerful consoles could not have been available from Day One (as long as they were willing to splash on thermal management solutions and an obviously larger form factor to compensate for the additional gpu die-space.) Is hitting the $400 price point worth staggering console releases? What say you, System Warriors?

If there's an option and it seems worth it then yeah I would consider the more expensive one. I figure it's a better reason than the PS3 Launch that had a ~$100 price increase just for extra storage.

I am fortunate enough to have money to buy what I want. With that being said, I always go for top tier products IF the product offers value to me. Am I getting my moneys worth? Is this something I'll be using for a while? Have I enjoyed past iterations of said products? That being said, I would most likely buy the more powerful version if that option was available.

Probably. However I prefer that they wait about 3 or 4 years before bringing out a more powerful model because by then they’re able to squeeze out something with a better power/performance ratio as well as something that would be a bit more stable.

If the price is worth it, then sure. An extra $100 or $200 for the best performance all gen is fine for me. I own a Pro solely for that experience.

@Archangel3371: But they're really not. They are able to offer more power at a tdp that makes the package "affordable". Think of it this way: after two or three years, the PS5 Pro would be cheaper to make because that technology would match the thermal performance to make it so.

Take a look at the heat-sink on a launch PS3 versus the PS3 Super Slim. Same concept (and man, that thing was a monster!)

Maybe it’s psychological, but I wouldn’t feel right about my purchase if it was the lesser of 2 or whatever Xboxes. I’d definitely buy the most premium Xbox if given the choice.

I would buy the most powerful model knowing that along the way a more powerful console will probably be released.

Yes, I believe in spending more to get the best quality for items that I value.

Either I'm going to buy the best version available or I'm not going to buy it at all because I know that if I just settled for the cheaper version, it would just make me unhappy knowing that I'm stuck with an inferior version.

No matter what pricepoint you launch at you'll always be able to put better hardware 3 years down the road at the same price. How is it any different than a pc gamer upgrading their rig every few years?

No, I wouldn't. I wasn't THAT interested in the Sony exclusives. I just wanted to try out some of them for a low price. I feel I made the right choice. My Switch is more fun.

Yes.

I hope Sony/Microsoft don’t do midgen refreshes anymore. I would rather buy the expensive version at launch.

PS5 already has my money. Doesn’t matter the cost. lol

Depends. If the extra cost is just for storage, I'll pass. If it's for performance or another features, then maybe -- the additional cost would be the deciding factor, not the performance.

I can easily afford an expensive console, and since I love gaming it is a no-brainer : I would gladly had paid 700 USD or whatever for the xbox one x at launch.

Yes, I hate playing games on weak hardware when there is a better option available.

No, the console model will start resembling PC hardware, which I don't want. To me the point of the mid gen consoles was to attempt 4K for the new 4K TVs, Unless they plan to make a mid gen refresh console targeting 8K I'd rather they drop the mid gen refresh.

Create one decent console at launch and release it for around $400 and then stick with it for 5-7 years (slim models are acceptable).
