World of Tanks on PS4 Pro vs Scorpio

While the game already looks fantastic on PS4, it’s jaw dropping on PS4 Pro. We’re rendering each frame at 3200 x 1800 resolution and the PS4 Pro does a high quality upscale from that to 4K which is 3840×2160 pixels. Tank and terrain textures are stunningly detailed, even up close. The already lush vegetation looks fuller and more natural on PS4 Pro due to the higher quality anti-aliasing.

The creative director of World of Tanks. TJ Wanger, recently stated in a developer Q&A that, “We plan to fully support Scorpio and are already running on it at full 4K resolution and it looks fantastic.”

World of Tanks already had an 1800p update for PS4 Pro a while back. I imagine using those art assets and optimizing for 2160p with Scorpio's extra power wouldn't need that much work. While I don't care for World of Tanks, I'm happy to see any developer doing this! I hope it becomes the norm, depending on the possibility of course.

RX 480 has Delta Color Compression

PS4 Pro uses checkerboard rendering and does not achieve true 4K ie: less power required and less memory bandwidth:

The PS4 Pro is definitely not powerful enough to support native 4K rendering for most games- instead, Sony uses a custom upscaling solution which is referred to as Checkerboarding. Checkerboarding can be a demanding technique, but if utilized right, with access to the triangle and object data in the ID buffer, the results can be visually resplendent.

“First, we can do the same ID-based colour propagation that we did for geometry rendering, so we can get some excellent spatial anti-aliasing before we even get into temporal, even without paying attention to the previous frame, we can create images of a higher quality than if our 4m color samples were arranged in a rectangular grid… In other words, image quality is immediately better than 1530p,” Mark Cerny explained to Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry.

“Second, we can use the colours and the IDs from the previous frame, which is to say that we can do some pretty darn good temporal anti-aliasing. Clearly if the camera isn’t moving we can insert the previous frame’s colours and essentially get perfect 4K imagery. But even if the camera is moving or parts of the scene are moving, we can use the IDs – both object ID and triangle ID to hunt for an appropriate part of the previous frame and use that. So the IDs give us some certainty about how to use the previous frame. ”

So far, so good. But what are the benefits of checkerboarding versus traditional geometry based rendering?

“[With] checkerboard rendering, the first two pluses are the same: crisp edges, detailed foliage, storm fences, but also, increased detail in textures, increased detail in specular effects,” Cerny said “But we’re doubling pixel shader workload, there are other overheads as well and it may not be possible to from 1080p native all the way up to 2160p checkerboard.”

The end result, however, is great looking games with relatively fewer resources and effort required.

“The point though is that these are techniques that can be implemented for a fraction of a per cent for the overall budget for the title,” Cerny said.

The PS4 Pro is due out next month, on November 10. It will be the first 4K capable console on the market (the Xbox One S technically supports 4K video, but for games, only goes as high as 1080p).

Scorpio will have the better looking games for least two years. Sony around 2019 will come out with a new fresh. And Microsoft in 2020 will update their console again.

LOL, a format refers to a platform. PS4 runs FreeBSD OS. Middleware runtime ecosystem and DRM separates PS4 from normal FreeBSD. PS4 is effectively Sony's Steam box.

Well not exactly the same 1800p kick the living crap out of 720p and is sharper than 1440p which is not even a standard on PC.

Too bad for you,

1. MS has mitigated Rysen workload level and didn't ignore it. Custom D3D12 command processor halves the CPU's GPU command list generation workload. Without custom D3D12 command processor, Scorpio would indeed need Ryzen or high clock speed Puma+ at ~4 Ghz. My prediction is correct.

MS removed double stage JIT re-compiler with custom D3D12 command processor i.e. D3D12 baked into silicon.

On PS4 and AMD PC GPUs that used "Intrinsic Functions", the games code path would be GCN instruction set bound.

2. On Vega,

Vega 11 being faster than RX-480 OC and R9-390X but slower than Vega 10 ~= Scorpio being faster than RX-480 OC and R9-390X but slower than Vega 10. My prediction is correct.

3. FP16... http://gpuopen.com/using-sub-dword-addressing-on-amd-gpus-with-rocm/

Polaris already has it's own subword Fp16 math processing i.e. double the data throughput with the same math operation rate.

MS selected Vega related optimizations that would speed up the GPU in general workloads.

Difference: 2,534,400 pixels <------ More than PS4 worth of difference.

Scorpio also has FreeSync / HDMI 2.1 VRR to make 31 to 59 fps range tear free and smooth.

1600 x 900 = 1,440,000 pixels

Difference: 633,600 pixels.

1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels

1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels

Difference: 1,152,000 pixels

At game console settings + max textures + AF 16X, the old R9-390X can easily play the same game at 4K ++++++ 30 fps.
