The Xbox 360's update and certification processes are "unacceptable" for free-to-play games, World of Tanks developer Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi told Polygon in a new interview.

"The good thing is with online games, sometimes if you screw up, you can do frequent updates," Kislyi said. "But one of the biggest challenges with Microsoft was the frequency of updates because the QA process and certification process takes an extremely long time. Totally unacceptable for a meaningful free-to-play."

World of Tanks will be a free-to-play title on Xbox Live, though it won't be entirely free-to-play, as players must have a Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kislyi said last month that the company must "tolerate" this requirement, which he is "not happy about."

It really says something about that when it takes months to get a patch through. Standards or not, that is not acceptable.

I wonder how much microsoft paid them at the e3 event to keep their opinions to themselves.

Of course it sucks for F2P games. You have to pay microsoft for XBLG just to play them. Hell microsoft wont even let you use netflix without paying extra for XBLG. They charge for all updates also meaning every little patch has a cost behind it.

They should have been smarter and gotten behind sony that makes all F2P games actually free because they dont require them to be behind the PS+ paywall. Planetside 2, dc universe online, warframe for instance can be played online without PS+ Sony lets the developers decide if they want to use the PS+ paywall and doesnt force them

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/ps4-planetside-2-dc-universe-online-will-not-require-playstatio/

Sony doesnt charge for smaller updates either. In the case of primal carnage they are waving patch fee's for the game http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Primal-Carnage-Coming-PS4-Sony-Waives-Patch-Fees-Removes-Concept-Approval-Process-54045.html

Microsofts idea of free to play seems to be "Hey its free to play! But you need to pay for XBLG in order to play it, so that still makes it free since you arent paying for the game"

You know why Microsoft does this? So they don't get constant disconnections, 8 hour updates, or even worse, corrupted data that has bombarded the PS3 since its release. I am glad Microsoft makes sure someones update does not crash someones system.

Depends on the game. they're definitely free for arcade games, f2p games might be included in that as well. If WoT plans on having tons of updates, I doubt they would've even considered Xbox if they had to pay for every one.

Well if they want to make sour relations with indie developers then go ahead. They will pay for it. MS has quite frankly become extremely unlikeable. I can't remember the last time they did something that I thought was good.

But microsoft has nothing to do with the patch. They dont make them, they dont test them, they dont figure out what needs to be patched (well they do on their own 1st party games) and so on. So the fee has nothing to do with quality control on microsofts end, it has to do with them charging other people to do all of their own work.

Oh and tim schafer talks about the cost of 40,000 dollars to patch on XBL. So no, it isnt really free. http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/02/14/203247/xbox-360-game-patching-costs-40000

So we went from "Patches are free" to "Patches are probably free". Make up your mind.

As I said earlier, they're free for arcade games. I'm sure f2p games are as well because

a) they are usually constantly updated - the new F2P poker game on Xbox is promised to be constantly updated - so charging the fees devs pay for retail patches doesn't make sense

b) he complained about the time they take to certify a game, yet didn't complain about costs or any charges

So yeah, I don't have a link just using logic to come to that conclusion.

Uh they do. Microsoft test all patches. They have to go through a cert process before MS will release them on XBL. Also, the first patch was always free, its the patches after that that cost money.

Secondly, Sony charge too. Its a deterrent to stop devs released half finished games and patching the hell out of them after.

Thirdly, they scrapped the charges recently. Probably due to pressure from idiots like Fish.

What exactly are MS (and Sony for that matter) worried about?

I can understand the checks for the unproven developers who spew out the crap that gives indie gaming a bad name but World of Tanks is one of the largest, most played free to play titles in the world, even with their dubious game store. They have a proven track record and the hardware companies should perhaps show a little trust if they want these games on their system and let the devs update the games as frequently as they require.

I know it really comes down to charging devs to patch their games and product quality is really just an excuse.

Even indie games had to pay, why would MS change things specifically for F2P games (a genre in which they only have a couple games too)? And yes, you not being able to prove = not being true. Or better it it equals not being true & true at the same time, since we don't know, we have no evidence to indicate whether they pay or not. Logic stops applying when patches are released for PS3 & PC and on the Xbox are delayed by long periods of time (sometimes months), and when even a F2P game is locked behind the pay wall. At least those should be available to Silver accounts.

MS needs to revise it's policies. They do not have the advantage on that field anymore.

Indie games don't have to pay. Have you been listening to anything I said? lol all that was scrapped, arcade titles can be patched as much as they want for free. So its prefectly reasonable to think free games like Happy Wars, WoT etc. can be patched for free as well. The dev never complained about any cost, just time it takes to go through Microsofts certification process.

Lets not forget Sony too charged for patches, so don't lay the blame entirely on MS, however Sony have since said they too don't charge indie developers for patches.

Why can't we just get complete games. Microsoft: We will put in a system to make sure games are finished and polished at the start" "Wahhhh MS is communist!! They hate INDIE DEVS! THEY ARE CANCER TO GAMING OMG GAMING DESERVES UNFINISHED GAMES! Why can't I pay $5 per uopdate or get DLC that makes the game better? Why would I want complete content on one disc? But microsoft has nothing to do with the patch. They dont make them, they dont test them, they dont figure out what needs to be patched (well they do on their own 1st party games) and so on. So the fee has nothing to do with quality control on microsofts end, it has to do with them charging other people to do all of their own work.

Oh and tim schafer talks about the cost of 40,000 dollars to patch on XBL. So no, it isnt really free. http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/02/14/203247/xbox-360-game-patching-costs-40000

Derp, of course they test the patches. Do you think they just leave them sitting there for ages just for the laugh? They strenuously test each patch to make sure it doesn't brick 360's. If there were no cert process, I don't think RROD would have been the biggest cause of ruined Xbox 360s...

They could expedite the process, sure, but I'd rather have some sort of quality control rather than absolutely nothing and hoping for the best.

And they scrapped the patching fee back in April. Sony still have the costs in place ;)

ms has always been pissy about updates.

they have this weird fetish about wanting games to be mostly finished and working when they come out.

hell, i'm still pissed that they were pressured to get rid of the patch fee they charged devs for releasing broken crap.

i liked that devs that released a faulty game were punished for it.

this is another one of those thing just like the odd world  dev problems topic yesterday.

they don't have the talent to meet the xbla requirements so they make out ms as the bad guy because they can't take the time and cost to make a better product.
